CLS6002-B Summative Assignment

Question:

For the purpose of this assignment you are asked to adopt the role of a Health Economist and report on the following scenario, an economic evaluation of a proposed healthcare intervention.

Section A:

1.Choose a long term condition from the following list: cardiovascular, respiratory, central nervous system, musculoskeletal or dermatology.

2.Using the CREST guidance (a step by step guide to economic evaluation in cancer trials) or other economic evaluation guidance tools, identify an intervention which you believe will yield health benefits to a patient with this condition e.g. medicines, surgery, medical device, psychological therapy or lifestyle advice.

3.Identify the proposed impact of your intervention in the following categories:

·Clinical Indicators (short to medium term)

·Health Outcome (long term)

Health outcomes may include measures of mortality and/or morbidity, for example, health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Both generic and disease specific measures of HRQoL may be appropriate.

Section B:

4.Choose a method of economic evaluation that is appropriate for your choice of LTC and using this assess the value of your proposed intervention.

Section C:

5.Identify key barriers and facilitators for your chosen intervention

6.Summarise what you found in your analysis in a final summary section which offers recommendations for action.

In undertaking this assignment please ensure that you provide justification of any choices that you make in the sections above by referring to previous research/studies and reference this. This is particularly relevant for sections A and B but you may find you have some literature support for section C also (but it is expected in A and B).

Assignment formatting and submission

Formatting of the final assignment should be aligned with the guidance below:

·Your report must be word-processed with one and a half spaces between the lines on paginated A4 paper. Only one side of the paper should be used.

·Your report should have a title page that clearly indicates your title, name, UB number, word count, and date. It should also include a statement indicating that the report has been submitted as part of the Summative Assessments in Health Economics.

·The left margin should be 3.5 cm with 2 cm margins at the top, bottom and right hand side.

·The text should be right and left justified and you should use Tahoma font (11 point) or equivalent. Separate each paragraph by two line spaces but do not indent the first line of each paragraph.

·You should make clear use of sections and subsections and the report should have a contents page and be fully paginated.

·The word limit for the report is 2000 words exclusive of references, tables, charts, graphs (see below). You will be penalised if your report is too short (this indicates a lack of detail) or too long (this indicates a lack of focus). According to University Regulations:

The penalty for exceeding the word limit will be a deduction of marks equivalent to the percentage of additional words over the limit.

Therefore if your report exceeds the word limit by 50% your marks will be reduced by 50%. The word limit does not include bibliographies, diagrams and tables, footnotes, table of contents and appendices of data.
