Delivering a Technical Presentation on a Scientific Paper

Overall, the primary task of this assignment is to deliver a 15-minute presentation on a scientific paper that you have found during your practical sessions. The topic of the paper must lie sufficiently within your subject area, and be recent, published in the last 3 years. Your presentation must present an understanding of the paper, carrying an acceptable technical detail (not just an overly simplistic overview). You will be expected to present five slides on your chosen paper (including a title slide), along with a written text that should be of an appropriate length to be read out to accompany the slides and form a complete presentation. You will not be required to make the presentation but the text, alongside the slides, should provide a clear indication of how the presentation would be made.

Your presentation must be made using PowerPoint. It should be designed to last 15 minutes.

The slides must be presented in a professional manner. You should approach this presentation as if you’re presenting the audience with a new subject. This means that your presentation should take on the following format:

• Introduction/Title Slide– introduce yourself and give the audience an overview of the subjects you are reporting on.
• Report papers– Give a broad description of the paper you are  focusing on. This should be in general terms and not be overly technical.
• Details of key technology– give important technical details on the subject including diagrams, equations or data, as necessary. You should reference key publications and/or researchers in the area to make clear that you’ve done a thorough job researching.
• Future directions for the technology– if appropriate, based on your research around the subject area, indicate the direction the area is heading and any predictions for where it will go in the near (or distant) future.
• Conclusion – summarize your presentation, drawing conclusions on what you thought was the most relevant or interesting aspect of your paper and draw the presentation to a close.
• References– final slide indicating all sources of information (Harvard format).
• Text Slides - providing the text that would have been provided had this mean presented in person.
