Historical Account of Migration and Ethnicity in the UK: A Portfolio Submission

Assignment task

1.The formative assessment will consist of submission of a 3000 word portfolio (+/- 10%, excluding reference lists and appendix of materials used) which is centred on a historical account of  a brief period (to a maximum  of 5 years) in the history of migration to the UK during which time a particular policy or period of change was taking place. (The time frame must take place between the approximate years of 1955-2018).

2.The main sources to be utilised in your selected time period, will consist of media reports and/or political discussion accessed through Hansard/online media sources which explores public, political and media reactions to migration/ethnicity and/or ‘race’.

3.It is expected that the introductory sections of the portfolio will explore both the broad historical and theoretical background to migration/ethnicity and race in your selected context.

4.The analytical argument which runs through the portfolio submission will be expected to engage with the following issues:

•Critical consideration of at least one key theory pertaining to explanations of migration.

•A discussion of how and why migration/ethnicity/’race’ are regarded as controversial subjects.

•A discussion on how and why a selected time frame was identified and (if applicable) its relevance to current theoretical, policy or practices debates in relation to ‘race’, ethnicity and migration.

•Evaluation of the impacts (actual or anticipated) of the policy, practice or media debates which occurred in your selected time frame.

•Recommendations in relation to policy, practice and/or legislative changes which could occur, and which are pertinent to the core theme/timeframe you have selected.

All materials cited in this assignment (articles/materials and web-links) will be referenced appropriately within the assignment text and included in the appendix to the submission (e.g. print-out/screen-shot of materials cited in your review/ relevant columns from Hansard or newspaper articles, etc).

If you are referring to a radio programme or documentary film, it is expected that you will provide a short summary of the content of the film/programme in a manner similar to that used in online television or radio listings. In the case of hyperlinks, the page of the relevant clip/film etc must be printed out or captured as a screenshot with the hyperlink clearly identified.
