How to develop a community strategy to address UN sustainability goal 1: End poverty in all its form

Introduction to UN sustainability goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere

Your first weekly task is to Identify which UN sustainability goal you are going to focus on for your community. Write an introductory statement for your community (around 500 words) that describes what the goal encompasses, why it matters to you, and how and why other people should engage in helping to address the issue.

Develop your strategy towards using it. This involves the development of a ‘content strategy’. Your strategy should be around 500 in length. You should then write/develop an example of the type of content that you will be posting to the community and submit that (so for instance, if you are developing a Linkedin profile, then write a blog that you would typically find on Linkedin, in the appropriate style, that speaks to your UN sus goal) and includes an action that the reader could take (e.g. completing a poll, emailing their MP, attending an event, resharing the content, etc.

Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere

The goal number one of the 17 goals of the agenda 2030, the main objectives of this goal is to eradicate poverty in all its forms across the world and not just in poor countries; to ensure that everybody, in particular the poor and vulnerable people to have equal rights to access economic resources, as well as basic services (United Nation, ND). Extreme poverty rates have fallen by more than half since 1990. Although this is a remarkable achievement, according to The World Bank (2021) in 2017 one in ten people in the world were still living on less than $ 1.90 a day and there are many millions of people who earn just over that amount every day. In addition, many people are at risk of falling back into poverty. Poverty goes far beyond just lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable living. Among its manifestations are hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, discrimination and social exclusion, as well as a lack of participation in decision-making processes.

Economic growth must be inclusive in order to create sustainable jobs and promote equality. To achieve this inclusivity and equality the system in which globalization works needs to change, the World Systems theory which divides the society into three groups that permit core group countries such as the USA and western Europe to exploit natural resources from the periphery group, poor countries such as the majority of the African country and to also exploit labour from the semi-periphery countries such as brazil which has wealth but also have a large population that lives in poverty(Ludden, 2012). As proof of this Oxfam (2015) research that the African continent was cheated $11 billion in tax by MNC’s in 2010, a small part of this amount would have helped to plug the healthcare funding gap to end the Ebola outbreak in the countries affected.

Why does it matter?

After the constant decline of the poverty rate across the world with a 16% in 2010 and a significant 10% in 2015, the pace of the decline has started to slow down in past years showing a rate of 8,2% of people still living with less $1.9 a day. At the same time in 2016 more than 4  million people were not covered by social protection with a large per cent only in the sub Saharan region, with the ongoing pandemic the condition of many people has worsen, pushing more than 70 million people into extreme poverty. Action needs to be taken to tackle the problem of poverty by addressing the issue to the general public. We have already missed the target for 2030, this means more effort will be needed to prevent any further postponements (United Nation, 2019).
