Data Mining Activity - Research, Presentation, and Peer Review

Learning Objectives

By the end of this task you will:

· Researched in a topical area of Data Mining

· Produced a short Power point presentation to the group on your topic, quoting references where necessary 5-7 slides.  You should add a commentary to each slide in the notes section of powerpoint or produce a word document to go along with it for any ideas which warrant further explanation

· Have had the opportunity to critical review your peers work, answer and ask questions with in your discussion group.

· Published your work to course members

· Rated your peers work

Brief

The aim of this activity is to get you to expand into new areas of data mining and build on what you already know you may use some of these techniques knowledge in your coming assignment.

week 1

The deliverable will be a powerpoint presentation of 5-7 slides which must stand on its own. (60% Marks) see guidance at the end of this brief.

The test of does it stand on its own; is to assume your viewer has no prior knowledge of the topic; would they feel informed, learnt something after they have seen your presentation.  If you wish you may upload a video or screencast but this is not required.

week 2

You will then upload your presentation to the  assessed discussion board and you are expected to comment on your peers work.  Your peers will then reviewed your presentation and apply a rating system. You are marked on your contributions and comments you make about your peers work (35% Marks).

Whether you have rated their presentation ? 1 to 5 stars ? did you add a comment, post a question, respond with an answer ?

Finally you will publish your powerpoint presentation to the rest of the group in the topics section of the open general discussion board.

This is so that you can share the results of your research with your colleagues and everybody can benefit from your hard work.  There are some marks associated with this publishing exercise (5% Marks).  The general discussion board will not be used for any further assessment so you can comment freely after you have completed the task and your post will stand as a memorial or record of your work.

Your Task

Ø In the discussion Board you will find a list of 10 different data mining topics

Task Overview

Sign up  to one topics, there are modelling and non modelling alternatives.  Each member of the group must chose a unique topic

Ø Follow the guidelines for sources of information

Ø Produce a powerpoint

Ø Upload to assess discussion board

Ø Rate and comment on your peers presentation

Final Task:  Post your answers to everyone in your discussion group and post your presentation to the general discussion board.

Assessment:  The Discussion Board Activities contribute 30% of your module mark. This Activity is the third of 3 Activities and contributes 10% of the module mark.

Your tutor will observe the ‘discussion threads’ in your group and will assess your individual contribution by:  observing the answers to Activity 3 that you have posted to your discussion group and monitoring the constructive critique developed when you are comparing your answers to your peers answers in the discussion group.

Discussion Board Activity 3 released: Week 23 8/3/2021)

Deadline for Discussion Board Activity 3: The discussion board will be closed for Marking on 7th April  but it is assumed that you will have submitted your answers and commented upon your peers contributions before this date.

On completion of your Research Task you will publish your findings in two places:

1) Assessed discussion board -for peer assessment and comment use the rating system and add comments.

2) General Discussion Board  - At the end of your task make a post on the general discussion board create a new thread with your chosen data mining topic and share your presentation with the whole course.  There are marks associated with the mechanics of doing it but no marks or peer assessment on feedback from your colleagues on this board.

If a thread title already exists then post your entry in that thread.  There will be at least two presentations on each topic.

You may use one of these methods in your assignment later in the term.

General Guidance Powerpoint presentation

You do not have to follow this to the letter and for some topics this format may not be appropriate so you will have to develop your own.

For each topic I am expecting a good reference, one literature (could be tutorial, review or definitive paper  it will have a high citation count), one textbook chapter and one web source, quality matters.  Try and avoid using Wikipedia OK to start your research but I am looking for good resources on your topic.

Identify an inventor or key researcher you may have to go back 20 years.

And any background associated with the topic.  The problem or solution trying to address

Identify pseudo code or algorithm or the logic of the routine if there is one.

Identify any metrics or parameters associated with the method, anything that might indicate performance or statistical significance.  If no metrics try and describe consequences of using it or not.

Identify any unique  reports or diagrams, provide a brief description explaining how to use them.  Identify if the terms can be found within SAS software consult the online reference or help system.

Identify an example or application which demonstrates a successful application or helps to define limitations of the method.

Any of your own observations or future work or developments
