Aircraft Systems
Answered

Introduction to the Chosen Aircraft

This Assignment assesses the following module Learning Outcomes (from Definitive Module Document):

1.Describe common electrical and mechanical systems found on modern aircraft

2. Identify regulatory bodies and their role with regard to the safety and certification of aircraft

3. Analyse the performance of various aircraft systems

4. Critically evaluate aircraft systems with respect to regulatory requirements.

Assignment Tasks:

Your task is to research and critically evaluate the systems found on one aircraft of your choice, and to prepare a 1500-word report detailing your findings.

Your report should include:

• An introduction to your chosen aircraft [no more than 300 words]. What type of aircraft is it? What is its role? When did it first fly? Did the designer have a certain philosophy in mind (e.g. more automation, more electric systems, hybrid propulsion etc.)?

• Discussion of at least three of the following systems as applicable to your chosen aircraft. Simple descriptions of the systems are not sufficient; in order to score well in this assignment, students must also be able to explain the operation of the systems. How do the systems work? Why were they designed in such a way? What happens if the system fails? How do the systems allow the aircraft to complete its mission?

1.Power & pumping systems

2.Hydraulic systems

3.Electrical systems

4.Undercarriage & braking systems

5.Environmental control systems

6.Fuel systems

7.Propulsion systems

8.Emergency systems.

• Consideration of regulatory requirements [no more than 400 words]. Are there any airworthiness requirements that have dictated the design of your chosen aircraft's systems? Have any air accidents influenced the design? Students are advised to refer to any such requirements throughout the report.

• A fault tree diagram for a failure condition relating to ONE of the systems onboard your chosen aircraft. The diagram can be hand-drawn and scanned or created using shapes in MS Word. Note: your fault tree analysis does not need to include probabilities.
Journal articles, aviation history articles, aircraft company materials and textbooks may be used for your research provided they are correctly referenced. The use of figures and tables is encouraged but, again, these must be well captioned and referenced. Students are reminded that plagiarism and collusion will not be tolerated.

Submission Requirements:

A report is to be submitted online via the assignment portal on StudyNet. The report should be uploaded in PDF (.pdf) format and be a maximum of 1500 words in length. Failure to upload the report in the correct format (.pdf) will incur a 5% penalty. Note that headings and captions are included in the word count, but the references section is not. The Vancouver reference style should be used.

Marks awarded for:

This assignment is worth 40% of the overall assessment for this module (40% of in-course assessment). Marks will be weighted as follows:

-Introduction to chosen aircraft 10%

-Discussion of systems operation 40%

-Consideration of regulatory requirements 20%

-Fault tree diagram 20%

-Formatting, spelling and grammar 5%

-Quality of referencing 5%.
