Technical Presentation on Product Development using QFD

Module Learning Outcomes

This Assignment assesses the following module Learning Outcomes (from Definitive Module Document):

To enable the students to:

1. Explore product development in a business context in terms of the product specifications, standards,life cycle assessment and functions of manufacturing industry;

3. Reflect the need for high ethical conduct in the context of product development;

4. Analyse competitive forces influencing product and business decisions;

6. Evaluate alternative product strategies individually and/or in a group.

They must have touch-screen face that allows patients to record messages and send them to doctors. It must limit the amount of direct contact doctors and nurses have with coronavirus (COVID-19) patients, thus reducing the risk of infection. Also, they must help the hospital to limit the number of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as protective masks, gloves and gowns that staff have to use. In addition, it must not subject to exhaustion. With a quick charge of batteries, they should be back at work in the ward.

They are to be used by top medical management personnel or medical doctors, working in health sector that deals with incidence of critical COVID-19 pandemic cases, among other medical issues. SFS-20+ devices are expected to possess some important features to be able to serve the sector effectively; hence to be smart/intelligent face shields indeed and in terms of functionality. The user must be comfortable with the use of this personal protective equipment (PPE) within and outside the hospitals, care homes and among other care centres/offices, whenever and wherever responsibility or duty calls. The smart SFS-20+ must appear as a normal/common PPE to avoid unnecessary  attraction and/or distraction from the patients.

Specifically, you are required to give a technical presentation introducing the ONLY ASSIGNED new product, using QFD. Research and use the following six basic steps recommended for building the House of Quality:

(a) identify what customer wants (state up to 10 possible customer needs for assigned product ONLY,

(b) identify how the product will satisfy the customer,

(c) identify relationships between ‘how’s’,

(d) develop importance ratings,

(e) evaluate competing products or services, and

(f) determine the desirable technical attributes.

Your individual power-point presentation must be limited to a maximum of ten (10) minutes duration and a maximum of ten (10) slides, excluding Title Page, List of References and Appendix Slides. Presentations shorter than the allowable duration and slides will NOT lose marks, but may lead to the omission of important material or information. Any presentation over the specified maximum duration of 10 minutes and 10 slides will be stopped at 10 minutes and 10th slides, respectively and the rest of the slides/presentation will be ignored, not marked. Also, materials in appendix will NOT count for marks and they should not exceed 2 slides in length.

Note that as a part of the presentation, you need to come-up with a title for the case study and it should appropriately capture your product engineering task. The title should simply draw attention of the reader/listener to your work. It should clearly represent the work presented.

Ensure that your power-point presentation is well-structured.

Take advantage of adding voice-over to your presentation, by ensuring that the key points are clearly discussed and the presentation captures the audience’s attention.

A note to the Students:

1. For undergraduate modules, a score above 40% represent a pass performance at honours level.

2. For postgraduate modules, a score of 50% or above represents a pass mark.

3. Modules may have several components of assessment and may require a pass in all elements. For further details, please consult the relevant Module Guide or ask the Module Leader
