The suggestions for improving performance are:

• Show knowledge of topic by using references to show knowledge of theory
• Show knowledge of topic by using examples (from lecture slides, textbooks, previous experience etc.) to show where and how the theory can be applied
• Don’t just describe the question topics but relate them to operations strategy. One way of doing this is to use the performance objectives, e.g. ERP for cost PO, TQM for quality PO etc. So, ERP aligns well with a strategy around cost PO.

The areas where the cohort performed less well were:

• Some answers too descriptive and did not discuss the implications of the 3 main trade-off approaches
• Some answers had too much description of improvement approaches and not enough evaluation of them in terms of operations strategy and performance objectives
• Should have used level capacity approach for service industry only
• Some answers discussed lean and agile but not leagile - postponement, base and surge and pare to
• The Barnes location matrix would be expected for this question
• Examples here very useful in showing understanding of scale, automation and coupling concepts
• Some answers did not answer the question topic
• Some answers too brief and descriptive with no evaluation to strategy and with no examples or references
