Portfolio focusing on two of the Standards for Clinical Nursing (Singapore Nursing Board, 2017). You will develop two entries, each of 800 words and each focussing on a different standard relevant to your area of practice. You should also include an introduction (200 words) and a conclusion (200 words). For each entry, you will analyse literature related to your chosen standard and you must apply both the standard and the literature to your own experience and area of practice. You will be expected to draw upon the relevant learning, teaching and evaluation theories, learnt throughout the module, that are relevant to your chosen standards.
Introduction
Nursing education has its foundation from Florence Nightingale back in the nineteenth century when she transited nursing into a profession through formal education, and made education her philosophy for professional nursing development (Selanders and Crane, 2012). Singapore Nursing Board (SNB) has included nursing education in the Code for Nurses and Midwives (SNB, 2018).
Nursing is a lifelong learning profession, given its wide range of specialities and different patient age groups, thus justifying the need for continuous education, which requires careful planning, implementation and evaluation (Callery, 2000; Eslamian, Moeini, & Soleimani, 2015). SNB (2017) has set up Standards for Clinical Nursing Education (SCNE) with fathomable criteria to maintain nursing competency. Likewise, new staff who transit to a different clinical setting should have sufficient guidance from clinical preceptor together with constructive institutional support to facilitate achievement of clinical competence and a smooth transition (Schmitt and Schiffman,2019). This is consistent with Standards Two and Four from SCNE of SNB; which focus on the learning environment and the role of a clinical preceptor being indispensable in comprehensive clinical nursing education (SNB, 2017). This portfolio intends to show how standard Two and Four influence role transition in new staff under training who have no prior ophthalmic nursing experience.
