Learning from good practice in leading and managing in public services, non-government organisations

Aims of the module

Introduction
Welcome to the 2020-21 “Learning from good practice in leading and managing in public services, non-government organisations and private business” module in the MBA Education Leadership and Management. This module intends, along all the other modules, to contribute and support the continuing development of the learning community that is the MBA Education Leadership and Management. From the experience of last year edition, two comments: the core concept of this module is good practice and experiential learning. We are experiencing VUCA turbulent times and environments, different sectors share similar wicked problems and exploring what is happening in one or more sectors may help developing innovations (not inventions) in our work place and work practice. I look forward to working with you.

The aims of this module are that students should examine and learn from current leadership and management ideas and practices in sectors outside of their own - in other public services, non-government organisations and private businesses.

Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:?
Review critically in order to develop procedures with respect to the management of the learning environment and the role of the teacher within that context.

Identify and use various sources of information and reporting on research including electronic as well as hard copy.

Understand how knowledge is advanced through research.

Examine and reflect critically on how descriptions of the management of education at both institutional and individual classroom level has been influenced by different psychological and pedagogical approaches.

Learning and Teaching Strategies
Apart from lectures (some of which will involve specialist guest speakers), seminars, use of e-learning and focused reading, the learning strategies will include assessment of evidence, questioning for understanding, cross-professional working, case studies and action-based enquiry. Inter-visitations may form part of the learning.

This course will be delivered in ways that engage students and expects them to understand and think critically about the ideas and concepts outside of their experience. Students will be encouraged to examine their own existing practices and those of their organisations through analysis and reflection on and in action.

Assessment
Students will submit an assignment (4,000 words excluding references) that revaluate/reflect/consider an institution’s capacity to lead and manage improvement in the areas studied on this course. In doing so, it will draw on and critique relevant theory, research, policy and practice.
