Proposal for a Product/Service in the Esports/Gaming Industry

Abstract

In this assignment you will propose a product or service you think will add value to the esports or gaming industry. You will explain what the product or service will do, who will use it, and what value you think it will create for them. You will also have to explain what data you think you will need to make the product or service (such as market data, gameplay data, social media analytics etc.), but you do not need to gather the data for this assignment.

You are required to include references (using Harvard referencing style: to the tools, online data repositories, or sources of information (such as academic writing, news websites, or podcasts on esports) that you refer to in your proposal. We also recommend including references to any tutorials (video or text) that you use to develop your skills, such as game publisher information on their APIs, tutorials for demo/replay file parsers, or machine learning resources.

The assignment should be between 5-10 pages, including diagrams and references.

Suggested assignment structure;

· Title page

Full name, student number, and student email

· Abstract – Write 2-3 sentences summarising the product or service

· Contents page

· The Product

What is the product?

Who is the product aimed at?

How will they use the product (website, app, new game strategy etc.)?

Are there similar products & how yours is different?

What value the user would get from your product?

· Data Analytics

What data you will need?

How you think you will access this data (computer vision, download demo/replay files, API etc.)?

What software or skills will you need to learn to complete this project?

· References

Include online data repositories, tutorials, and tools

Include academic articles, news websites, and podcasts etc.

Total /30.

Evidence of background research /5

Students need to demonstrate research in the areas of data science, the business of esports, and an understanding of similar or competing products and services. Wikipedia should not be used as a primary source of information and should not be referenced. Use of websites should give the last date of access of the website. Referencing should be in the Harvard format, both in the way it is laid out in the bibliography, and the way it is used in the text of the document.

Understanding of the Esports business /10

Students should include a description of the area of esports or the gaming ecosystem (players, teams, platforms, publishers etc) in the context of their product or service. Students should suggest how their product or service will change the esports or gaming ecosystem, even if only in a small way, to demonstrate their understanding of the value of their product or service and the impact it might have.

Suggested use of Analytics /10

The way in which data is collected, stored and analysed should be described. Students must demonstrate that they are doing an MSc in Data Analysis for Business Intelligence, and as such vague references to data mining and AI will score low marks. Descriptions of tools and analytical techniques should be given in detail, and visualisations and diagrams will help communicate this information. Clear understanding of how particular data analytic methods might be useful in the specific innovation suggested is important.

Presentation /5

The assignment should have a clear structure, and should attempt to use the structural features (such as section headings, bullet points, and proper labelling of figures, diagrams, and tables) of your preferred word processor such as Microsoft Word. Grammar should be thoroughly checked, though some account will be taken for whether or not English is first language or part of the same language group. There should be a title and contents page. There will be account taken of the fluency of the language. Do not use long sentences with many commas, and check carefully the use of punctuation such as semi colons and colons.
