Investigating Computing Problems for IT Project Proposal

Investigate one or more computing problemsrelated to your programme of study for the purpose of writing a proposal related to IT topics

Identifying a topic of interest and writing a proposal are important steps for the preparation of a final year project. For this coursework you are asked to investigate one or more computing problems related to your programme of study for the purpose of writing a proposal that could form the basis of your level 6 Project.

This is an individual piece of work and not a group effort. You should submit a self-supporting, word processed, description of your proposed project which is sufficiently detailed to enable the reader to appreciate the nature of the project, and to understand how all the resources described relate to the project.

The Project Proposal will assess your ability to generate a research question; ability to critically review and evaluate the relevant literature and skill in developing a research proposal. The Proposal will be assessed against the criteria shown below in table 2. A full set of level 5 grading criteria can be found at the end of this brief.

The Proposal Should Include The Following Sections:

  1. Title:You should give a title to your proposal which reflects the nature of work carried in this research project.
  1. Overview and Motivation:This section should provide an overview of the topic addressed in this project proposal and present the main motivation behind it, as discussed in lecture 2.

  2. Background and Related Literature Research:This section should provide a review of the literature related to the topic addressed in the proposal as well as an analysis and critique of each literature source, as covered in lectures 3, 4 and 5. This needs to include a brief literature review with citations to academic publications. The first purpose of the literature review is to map out work already carried out and to identify potential gaps in knowledge. The second purpose of the literature review is to explore previous methodologies adopted within the field of the chosen investigation.

  3. Project Aim and Objectives:In this section you should explain the main objectives you would like to achieve through this project, as covered in lecture 2. Keep the list short and precise. Think of the objectives as milestones along the way towards achieving the aims. This should also briefly establish the contribution to knowledge in the proposed work, which should be linked to the overall aims of the project and a possible new methodology/analysis specifically developed for the proposed investigation. This should also endeavour to predict the tangible outputs or deliverables of the work upon completion of the project.

  4. Project Methodology and Justification:In this section, you should identify the research methodology adopted in this project, as covered in lectures 6, 7. You should also provide a justification for the research methodology’s choice including for data collection, analysis and development. Identifying relevant methods is also the second main purpose of the literature review.

  5. Plan of work:In this section, you should provide a Gantt chart in which you clearly identify the breakdown of the work plan tasks , the dependencies between tasks (if any), and the start/end dates of each task, as covered in lecture 8. This should be as detailed as possible with respect to activities and time frames with milestones/deliverables suitably identified over the period of the project.

  6. Ethical Considerations:In this section you will consider what ethical issue that your data collection may have and how you will address them in accordance with the OUC/LJMU Code of Ethics for Research.

  7. References:In this section, you should provide a list of the references cited in the proposal, as covered in lecture 4. This should include seminal and recent peer reviewed works published in the area of investigation.
