Major Project Proposal

Upon successful completion of this assignment, the student:

• Will understand how to formulate research problems/questions;

• Will be able to contextualise and justify research problems/questions in relation to b their chosen industry;

• Will have learned how to apply a range of scientific and creative research methodologies within a large-scale project;

• Will learn how to conduct critical analysis of research through an annotated bibliography;

• Will understand how to plan a large-scale project by considering appropriate milestones and the use of resources.

The Major Project Proposal requires you to provide a 2000-word plan of your Major Project. It will highlight and justify your proposed research problem/question and integrate information on the potential literature and methodological approaches you will consider during the Major Project. The proposal will also outline your planned schedule and required resources. In addition to the written proposal, you must also deliver a 5-minute in-class presentation outlining the proposal’s content. Successfully completing the proposal provides you with the approval to proceed to the Major Project stage in the following module.

Students are required to:

• Carry out a 5-minute (±10%) in-class presentation on the proposal;
  
  
• Use relevant books, journals and creative sources as research material;

• Ensure that all sources are referenced according to the referencing guidelines;

• Format the proposal in adherence with the formatting guidelines;

• Follow the structure outlined on the next page.

1. ?Introduction?: This section should focus on the research problem and/or research question(s), leading the reader to understand the basic objectives and limitations of the project. You must justify your case for a BA or a BSc clearly and briefly outline your chosen supervisor.

2. ?Rationale and Significance:? This section should state the reasons for undertaking the research project, as proposed in the introduction. It should also indicate how the project is relevant to a creative media industry, highlight its significance to the wider society and explain why it will contribute to your knowledge and understanding of the chosen field of study.

3. ?Annotated Bibliography of Key Sources:?This section requires you to provide an overview of the key literature that you aim to use in your Major Project. You may use existing literature, practices and creative works in your chosen field of study. You should include eight primary or secondary sources, at least four of which must be offline sources such as books or journals.

4. ?Proposed Table of Contents?: Students should include a proposed Table of Contents for the Major Project.

5. ?Methodology:?This section should outline the research methodology and methods to be applied and their rationale. They should stem from the theoretical and industry nature of the chosen topic.

6. ?Resources:? You should propose the resources required to complete the project. This must take into account hardware, software, studio facilities and access to specific expertise. You should also provide any further requirements necessary for the completion of the project.

7. ?Project Breakdown and Timeline:? This section has two requirements: Firstly, you should include a table providing a proposed breakdown of tasks across the 600 hours of the Major Project. This table should also highlight the project’s proposed theoretical/practical weighting. Secondly, you should map out these tasks in a Gantt chart that outlines each phase of the project, with weekly/monthly milestones indicated.

8. ?Reference List:? The proposal should contain in-text citations and a reference list of sources, cited in accordance with the Harvard system
