CBB305 Arithmetic Skills for Health Studies

Using the guidance distributed in class and on Moodle, write ONE essay of 1,500 words on the following topic: -

One in four British adults is obese, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, prompting fears that the UK has become the "fat man of Europe". To what extent is obesity a product of the society we live in? Evaluate the evidence for the management of obesity in the UK in order to arrive at your own conclusion.

This unit will assess your ability to structure your essay in order to develop an argument with clarity and your ability to capture your thinking in effective sentences. You will need to show that you have conducted research to develop your thinking. In addition, you will need to write with an appropriate academic tone and clearly reference the material you have used to develop and support your ideas.

1. Understand the significance of the essay title in determining the content.

1.1. Analyse the requirements of the question or task.

1.2. Cover the main points, omitting irrelevant detail.

1.3. Include material from own research.

2. Be able to plan and structure essays.

2.1. Include an introduction which comments on the subject and describes the treatment of it to follow in the essay.

2.2. Balance ideas and arguments with evidence and examples.

2.3. Use linking sentences in paragraphs to set the new ideas in the context of the argument and the essay as a whole.

2.4. Provide a conclusion which sums up the arguments and considers the implications.

3. Be able to write in an appropriate style.

3.1. Write in a detached, balanced, and objective manner.

3.2. Write formal English avoiding emotive language and colloquialisms.

4. Know the conventions for acknowledging sources.

4.1. Acknowledge the work of other authors both during the essay and in a list of references.

4.2. Use the conventions of listing sources alphabetically by surname and including the author, title, publisher, date and place of publication.

Submit a plan for the research you will conduct in tabular form indicating the sources you will investigate, why you will be investigating the sources and when. The table should list the sources, the main points discovered from the sources and key quotes. (AC 1.1, 1.3)

A first draft of your writing. This should be your first attempt to develop your thoughts. You should attempt to use accurate language and your focus should be on the development of your thinking.

Review your work and edit it with annotations to show how you would improve it for the following purposes:

To ensure you are writing with the appropriate academic tone.

To ensure that your work is clear and succinct with no unnecessary language.

To ensure you are including evidence (from your research) to support your ideas.

Review, edit and rewrite your final essay to satisfy the following points:

• The introduction should state the point of view to be explored.
• The conclusion should sum up the points you have made and indicate what your points illustrate.
• The essay should have cohesion (links between the points you have made), and there should be balance between points made.
• Use appropriate academic tone.
• Your essay should include in-text references to your research and a bibliography at the end using standard (eg Harvard) conventions.

Supporting material on essay writing skills will be distributed in class and is available on Moodle. When researching this topic, use the skills that you have developed from the Finding & Reading Information unit. This topic will support02 criteria covered in Nutrition and Digestive System units.
