Critically evaluate the strategy for managing people at an organisation of your choice (3000 words). Your choice of organisation should be drawn from one of the following sectors: The consumer sector (including food, beverage and retail companies, e.g. Sainsbury’s, Amazon etc.), information technology sector (e.g. Facebook, Google), communication sector (e.g. Virgin Media, Vodafone). It is advisable that you focus on a large company that you are able to find sufficient academic and non-academic articles on (see below). You must introduce the company you have selected – please remember that the essay is for this module, i.e., Managing People, and keep your introduction brief and focused.
You must describe the people management strategy of that company. Please use appropriate and legitimate sources in order to support your claims about the company’s people management strategy such as academic material (e.g., journal articles, books etc.) and credible media and industry/trade publications (e.g., BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN, The Independent etc.). You may consider the impact of the pandemic, but you are required to consider the strategy for managing people under more normal circumstances, i.e., how the company of your choice has managed people before 2020.
Your evaluation must analyse the strategy for managing people at your choice of company by aligning it with at least one concept we will cover on the module. To do this, you must select a concept that we cover on the module, e.g., bureaucracy, scientific management, motivation, etc, and illustrate the ways in which the people management strategy at your choice of company reflect that concept.
