Producing a Magazine on Management Skills and Practice

THE BRIEF/INSTRUCTIONS

You are required to produce a magazine detailing your knowledge of management, management practice and insight into your own skills.  The magazine should contain the following:

a) Front cover (1 x A4) – This should be ‘self-branded’ and highlight short key messages you would want to communicate to employers about your management knowledge and skill set.

b) Intro and contents page and overview of management (2 x A4) – This should contain an introduction to you (background, aspirations, rationale for studying management etc.) as well as listing the content of each section.  This should contain an overview of management and a little insight into history

c) Overview of management challenges/issues and the need for/importance of becoming a skilled manager(s) (2 x A4) – This should detail the change in the business environment and identify graduate and management skills.

d) Identify 3 management skills which you have practiced during the module and dedicate 2 x A4 spread to each skill (6 pages total).  This should detail:

· Definitions and importance of the identified skill

· Explanations of any key terms or concepts

· Example(s) of where you have used the skill in practice and which aspects you have been successful in.

· How you feel that this skill will benefit you in your future career

The magazine can be produced using Microsoft Powerpoint.  When converted to a PDF document, this can be uploaded to FLIPHTML5 website and a link can be generated for use on LinkedIn and other professional social media.

Marking Criteria:

Using theory to support understanding of current management (30%):

Ability to utilise reliable research to explain some of the key issues experienced in management today and contrast to how this has developed historically.

Theory supported discussion of management practice  (30%):

Use reliable theory and literature to identify and support discussion of some of the key concepts and skills involved in management practice.  This should be illustrated both in section c and in section d of the magazine.

Analysis of your practice and skills (30%):

Illustrate how you have practiced management skills on the module and apply these examples to the theory around those skill sets in order to illustrate your own learning. Use this analysis to identify how you might use these skills in your future career in management.

Presenting yourself as a manager (10%):

Present your ‘self-brand’ as a practicing manager clearly and professionally as appropriate for management careers.

PREPARATION FOR THE ASSESSMENT

  • A guidance video on the assessment is available on Blackboard in the folder labelled ‘Assessment’.  This talks through a step-by-step guide to what to include and how to set out the assessment.

  • In the Blackboard folder labelled ‘Assessments’, links are provided to LinkedIn learning videos on:
    How to edit powerpoint slides
How to design different parts of a magazine
  • An example of a magazine for this topic is available here

  • An example of a powerpoint presentation transferred into magazine format is available here:

  • Sessions on relevant theory are pre-recorded and available on Blackboard. At the end of each session there is a short overview of how the material covered in that session can be used for the assessment. Additional reading is also recommended for each topic at the end of each pre-recorded session.

  • There are 5 workshop sessions throughout the module which will give tips/help with creating the magazine and offer regular opportunity for you to share your work with the tutor to receive feedback.

  • The final magazine will be submitted in two parts in order to present a formal opportunity for feedback and guidance on the next section.
