Research Methodology and Literature Analysis Assessment

Part One: Applying the Research Onion Model to a Project

There are two parts to this assessment: You must complete both parts.

One way to understand research methodology is to use a model, such as the Research Onion we discussed in class: Describe in detail the Research Onion (Saunders and Lewis, 2018), and using one project that you are familiar with, explain how that project would fit onto each level of the Research Onion.

Identify and critically analyse, three different pieces of literature on one topic: This should be done in terms of the quality and relevance (see class notes/videos). This should not be a literature review, but an evaluation of the quality of your selected literature.

Use the information on blackboard as a guide.

For part one, explain where and why the project fits onto the Research Onion.

For part two, identify and then critically evaluate three pieces of literature all on one topic. Provide the full reference for each piece of literature, then analyse in terms of quality, for example the quality of the source, reliability, triangulation with other work, also explain how it links to the other two pieces of chosen literature.

Do not complete a project “literature review” and any technical information should be minimal.

The word count for this report is 3000 words (±10%) as detailed in the module descriptor.

Excess words will not be marked and hence will not contribute to your grade. This assignment will be marked out of 100%.

This assignment contributes to 100% of the total module marks. Saunders, M. and Lewis, P. (2018) Doing Research in Business and Management.

Learning Outcomes to be assessed (as specified in the validated module descriptor)

  1. Critically analyse, identify and select the most appropriate methods and techniques to carry out a research project.
  2. Critically analyse information and data from a range of sources.

Grading Criteria:

Very detailed critical analysis of research methodology with use of relevant supporting literature, carefully analysing in relation to the project with a wideranging discussion.

Detailed analysis of research methodology with use of relevant supporting literature, analysing in relation to the project with a wide-ranging discussion. Good work Analysis of research methodology with use of some wider literature, analysing in relation to the project with a good discussion

Adequate

Adequate analysis of research methodology, some aspects partially addressed, vague or incomplete. Adequate links to project. Discussion shows limited knowledge of the core theory and principles with some minor errors.

Inadequate work lacking in basic knowledge and understanding of research methods. Suitable methodology not clearly identified. Discussion is confused with serious gaps in understanding. Errors in analysis of project. Critical analysis of literature 40

Exceptional

Outstanding ability to select literature demonstrated. Literature evaluation considered with original critical thinking evident and all information is organised in a logical and coherent manner.

Very good knowledge ability to select literature demonstrated. Literature evaluation considered with original thinking evident, and information organised in a logical and coherent manner.

Good work Reasonable ability to select literature demonstrated. Literature evaluation considered with limited original thinking evident, but information is organised in a reasonably logical manner.

Gaps in understanding and knowledge shown through literature selection. Literature evaluation is considered but with little evidence of original thinking and information lacks organisation.

Inadequate selection of literature showing only a basic knowledge and understanding. Areas of literature not identified and or lacking coherence. Discussion is confused with serious gaps in understanding. Presentation, structure of report and referencing 20

Outstanding original discussions with all aspects of the report addressed in a logical manner. Excellent written presentation skills: Report is professional, fluently written and highly readable. Full and correct and of Harvard Referencing.

Very good original discussion with all aspects of the report addressed in a logical manner. Very good written presentation skills: Report well written and highly readable. Good use of Harvard Referencing.

Good work Good discussion with reasonable analysis and most aspects of the report considered. Some minor errors in topic or presentation. Report reasonably well written: A clear attempt at Harvard Referencing.

Limited demonstration of written skills: Report is basic and readable but with poor structure. Poor attempt at Harvard Referencing.

An incomplete or confused piece of work with no logical structure. No real understanding of referencing
