Information Literacy and Evidence-Based Practice Module

Blended learning approach

This module helps you to build knowledge and skills in information literacy, essential concepts, research methods, evaluation and implementation of research evidence-based information in order to provide safe, person centred care to maintain or restore health and well-being.

The module adopts a blended learning approach, which combines face-to-face sessions in the classroom with a guided self-directed study independently/and or in a group using electronic learning materials. This learning approach will prepare you for study at level 5 in the second year. This module assist you in developing the requisite skills that you will require throughout the course and during your professional practice.

The module team look forward to working with you on developing your knowledge and skills that are essential to achieve the year one learning outcomes.

This module aims to introduce key knowledge and skills to support the identification, use and implementation of evidence to underpin nursing and healthcare interventions and professional practice.

Content of the Module

• Information literacy

• Introduction to quantitative and qualitative research (including research terminology)

• Introduction to mixed methods research

• Literature searching

• Types and sources of evidence

• Ethics of research

• Plagiarism and academic integrity.

• Approaches to referencing

• Evidence based care

• Multi professional care

• Introduction to literature appraisal tools

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

1. Discuss the different types of evidence and the importance of evidence-based interventions for safe, person centred care to maintain or restore health and well-being.

2. Locate and reference appropriate information relevant to healthcare practice.

3. Appraise a piece of research and reach a judgement about its quality and applicability to practice using an identified appraisal tool.

This assessment task is part 1 of the two assessments towards developing your theoretical and practical understanding of evidence based practice.

You are required to engage in a literature search and submit an annotated bibliography (1,000 words).

In order to meet your learning outcomes, you will need to choose one from the following themes:

• Infection Control

• Hydration and Nutrition

• Person-centred Care

• Communication

Once you have a chosen theme, identify 2 research articles from a peer reviewed journal related to nursing practice that highlights an area of practice that links to the themes above (L.O2). One article must be based on QUALITATIVE and another QUANTITATIVE research methods. Your papers MUST be primary research published with in last 5 years (systematic reviews /opinions/ literature reviews are not allowed).

1. Introduction (150) an introduction generally need to answer these 3 questions.

a. What? The introduction must begin by clearly explaining what the essay is about. This section needs to explain in your own words what is required in the assignment brief given above.

b. How? The second part of the introduction need to outline how the essay is structured. You need to summarise the details given in point 2 below.

2. Background (150)

a. What is evidence based practise and its importance in nursing

b. Provide an evidence based rationale for your chosen theme and its relevance to nursing practice.

3. Search Strategy (200)

a. Discuss the Literature search strategy that you have used.

a. Identify the sources you searched.

b. Give details of the ‘terms’ you used to search for the literature.

c. Inclusion and exclusion criteria. Give a rationale for this criteria.

4. Annotated Bibliography article 1 (200)

 Each annotation will include:

a. Citation details (set out in the same style as an UWL Harvard referencing listSee Cite them Right for referencing guide)

b. A short statement that explains the main focus or purpose of the research paper

c. Briefly discuss the usefulness and/or limitations of the paper (e.g. reliability of the text, limitations of the paper, credibility of the author)

d. An evaluative comment on the paper that may take into account how the findings will improve nursing practice and benefit patient care

5. Annotated Bibliography article 2 (200)

Each annotation will include:

a. Citation details (set out in the same style as an UWL Harvard referencing listSee Cite them Right for referencing guide)

b. A short statement that explains the main focus or purpose of the research paper

c. Briefly discuss the usefulness and/or limitations of the paper (e.g. reliability of the text, limitations of the paper, credibility of the author)

d. An evaluative comment on the paper that may take into account how the findings will improve nursing practice and benefit patient care.

6. Conclusion

a. Summary. Summarise the key learning points that have emerged from your discussion above.

b. Recommendations. Make recommendations on what needs to be done in light of your findings and conclusions.
