Task

Write an essay of approximately 1500 words (+ / - 10%) on the following question:

Identify and discuss, with examples, the current global issues facing the international tourism or hospitality or leisure or events industry.

Extent of collaboration allowed

This is an individual assignment, therefore no collaboration is allowed with other students undertaking this assessment. All work should be an individual effort. It is advisable to discuss your ideas with the lecturer.

Assignment Detail

1. The link between current global issues and the international tourism or hospitality or leisure or events industry:

Identify current / contemporary global issues that present challenges and opportunities for the international tourism (includes airline and aviation) or hospitality or leisure (includes sport) or events industry – remember to link the two together sufficiently! You do not need to cover all industries – focus on ONE (e.g. tourism industry or airline and aviation industry or hospitality industry or leisure industry or events industry). The evidence needs to be specific. Don’t use generalised and anecdotal evidence. Your arguments need to be supported with academic sources, especially journal articles, books, and book chapters and contemporary / recent secondary data.

2. The structure:

Essay style: You will be writing an essay, therefore the following applies: Title (on top of the assignment), Introduction, Main Body, Conclusions, and References (in Harvard Referencing System). When writing your essay bear the following in mind:

Tell us what you are going to tell us – covered in the introduction part of your essay.

Tell us – covered in the main part of your essay.

Tell us what you have told us – covered in the conclusion part of your essay.

3. Use of literature:

Use academic sources, i.e. books, journal articles etc. At least 10 referenced academic sources are required. Academic journals and books can be good resources which may give you some good ideas about current global issues facing the tourism or hospitality or leisure or events industry. Also, make use of industry literature from the travel and tourism industry to support your arguments. You are required to have proper in-text citations and a reference list at the end of your assignment using the Harvard Referencing System.

4. The writing:

Try to approach this assignment in a logical and systematic way. Produce a plan of the essay before you start. Make sure you have a logical structure, a convincing argument, clear analysis of the situations which ‘set the scene’, and clear explanation which relate to the assignment task, and a conclusion that draws your argument together.
