In this section, you should provide your title, topic, question and a brief description of what your project is about. It must be a Criminological title/topic/question of your design. Examples of topics include: prison reform, victims rights, terrorism, knife crime, gang crime, recidivism, community sentences, penal populism, gender and crime, institutional racism in the criminal justice system, and more. Please avoid general topics and large causal questions. Title/topic/question must be feasible and manageable. 

This section should provide an introduction to and background on your research topic, such as: why you have chosen it, its relevance, what sociological themes and issues it deals with and addresses, its history or background, important facts and examples, debates, what you would like to cover or examine, etc.  

In this section, you should provide an overview of previous research that has been carried out in this topic area. You need to identify, summarise and review research which is central and important to your research topic and area, and show:

 

This should not be a bibliography, but all sources discussed in the literature review must appear in your bibliography.

Literature reviewed must be academic and you must use and cite original sources. It can include books and journal, but textbooks, general introductions and internet sites should not be included. Official documents and reports can be used but only if they are central to research on and understanding your topic and answering your question.  

The overall aim and objectives of your study needs to be outlined in this section. Think about why you are researching this topic, asking particular questions, addressing particular social problems or issues, what you are arguing, hoping to prove, and what you hope to achieve with your research, arguments and project as a whole.    

This section should provide clear information about the research method(s) you will be using to conduct your study. This should not be an overview of different/specific methods, but demonstrate an understanding of the methods chosen, their suitability to your particular research project, and how they will be used. 

This section should outline and discuss any ethical issues arising from your research. You need to demonstrate an understanding and awareness your responsibilities as a researcher, an understanding of existing ethical codes and guidelines and the ethical implications of your research project, topic and question, methods and research subjects. 

In this section, you should give some indication of ways in which your research could be used. For example, you might want to consider if it can be applied to social policy, contribute to debates in social theory, future development of research, etc.   

Section 8 References and Appendices

List all sources you have used or referred to in the text (including all those included in the literature review) and any other sources you may use in your research. Attach any appendices if applicable. 

Give some indication of the timescale for your project. Try to estimate how long the various stages of your research could take.  
 
Resources will include the things you will need to successfully complete your project.  For example, money, equipment and time.

 

Students must use and complete the project proposal form. All sections of the proposal must be completed (provisional title and research question, introduction/background, literature review, aims and objectives, methods, ethical issues, dissemination, references and appendices, and timetable and resources) and choices (e.g. topic and question, literature and methods) must be fully explained. Assignment should also meet the word limit and include your name and ID#, school, module name and code, tutor’s name and the date.

 

 A referencing guide is provided by the university library and it is expected that students follow it or another recommended guide in order to ensure use of an approved referencing style and method.
