Using Ecological Systems Theory to Analyze Child Development: A Case Study Poster

Module Learning Outcomes

Using ecological systems theory to analyse a case study, produce a poster offering a pictorial representation to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the influences on a child/ young person’s development through to young adulthood. You will draw on key theories and literature covered within the module.

Module Learning Outcomes

1. Compare and contrast a range of key concepts and theoretical perspectives in relation
to human development
2. Examine the impact of wider social, cultural and political factors on development
3. Communicate structured and coherent arguments (analyse) showing the influences within the transition from childhood to adulthood

Your task:

Your poster will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of how you might promote the positive development of ONE child or young person from her/his current age up to the age of young adulthood (around 16-18 years of age). The poster may also include issues that have the potential to hinder that positive development, and offer suggestions to overcome them.

Case study 1:

S lives with her mother in a rented flat on the second floor of an old house in a rundown part of the city. S is 3 years old. Her father left them nearly two years ago; he has since started a new family and only sends a small amount of money to help support her. Her mother has recently become a part-time college student and also works 25 hours a week in a local supermarket to help pay the bills. S spends time in a day nursery and also two days a week with one of her mother’s friends who has two young children herself. The maternal grandparents visit about three times a year but they do not have a lot of money and live over 400 miles away. The mother often quarrels with her parents when they visit.

Case study 2:

D and L have two children: R is 8 years old and baby C is just 12 months old. The couple live with L’s ageing parents in an over-crowded terraced house. D works long hours in an office and earns a reasonable wage but L has experienced post-natal depression since the birth of the baby and cannot yet return to work. R is currently in Year 4 at school and likes to spend time outdoors, especially with friends; R’s recently deteriorating behaviour is currently raising some concerns with the class teacher. The baby has mainly been cared for by the grandparents during these early months of life but D has also spent large amounts of time with the baby when not at work, as the task of looking after a baby is too much for ageing grandparents and L is currently finding it hard to care for the baby for any length of time.

Case study 3:

B is 12 years old and lives on a small residential housing estate with his two parents, and 11 year old sister, N. Life has been good until 6 months ago when both parents, L and Z,
were laid off from the local factory. Although they received a small lump payment, this has been used to pay rent on the house and to pay off rising debts that were incurred a few years ago. The family is struggling to work within a very limited budget and finding new employment is proving impossible at the moment. B is part of the local ice hockey team but the cost of this is causing arguments at home. N has just entered secondary school but was not able to go to her school of choice and so finds herself without a group of friends.
