On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

1.Analyse key employment markets, the evolution of these markets and how this impacts upon organisations;

2.Create and evaluate effective recruitment, selection and talent management  processes including diversity management strategies and job design;

3.Identify legal and ethical aspects of resourcing and evaluate how this impacts upon design of resourcing techniques;

4.Evaluate strategies for building long-term organisational performance via talent and resource management;

5.Critically analyse relevant data in order to evaluate the effectiveness of  resourcing strategies and implement improvements;

6.Articulate a critical appreciation of ethical and professional methods of exiting employees from organisations in the context of dismissals, redundancy and retirement.

This module examines the increasing complex challenge of recruiting, selecting, retaining and exiting the right employees in order to create competitive advantage within an organisation. Within competitive, global employment markets this task is much more than writing job advertisements, interviewing candidates and making a job offer. Creating an effective brand as an employer, designing reliable and valid recruitment processes, engaging in innovative job design, analysis of key metrics such as turnover and the development of talent management strategies able to fulfil the future needs of an organisation are all addressed within this module.

This module forms part of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) accredited MSc in Human Resource Management programme, thus providing you with highly valuable professional recognition for your studies.

To enhance your learning and meet the challenges of this level of study, readings will also draw upon empirical research into the topic to enable discussion about the implementation and impact of employee engagement strategies. Where possible, guest speakers will be involved to show practising human resource managers address the issues discussed.

Due to Government guidance regarding COVID 19, during the early part of Semester 2 the teaching and learning will be delivered online.  The sessions will be delivered in live online lectures and seminars held via Blackboard Collaborate, which students are expected to attend and engage with in real time. These sessions will be recorded to allow students to revisit the content as part of their independent study and revision for the assessments.

We are hoping that later in Semester 2 dependent on Government guidelines that we can move to a blended approach of online and face 2 face learning. We will advise separately if this is the case.

In addition, use of the Blackboard Learning System will form a repository for all module materials, throughout the entire academic year.

In order to maximise the amount of time for learning in the class-based sessions you may be asked to do some preparatory work before some sessions, for example making notes on relevant research papers or reading up on case companies. It is essential that you do this preparatory work as some of the class activities will be based upon it, and you will be able to draw upon it to write your assignments.
