PHL102 Introduction to Philosophy

3 to 5 sentences response to each 5 paragraphs. Thank you! PROVIDE FEEDBACK TO THE OTHERS IN YOUR GROUP READ the posts from the others in your small group and PROVIDE FEEDBACK to each in a REPLY. The purpose of this is NOT to debate the topic. Rather, you can raise clarifying questions, make suggestions for narrowing the topic, point out additional complexities and/or moral considerations related to a topic, and suggest moral principles that could be useful. If you know of an article, documentary, or other resources that could be helpful, please leave relevant information along with a description. Provide at least a 3-4 sentence reply to each post. (This is not the same as a peer review in a composition class. Stay focused on giving feedback to the content rather than the writing of your classmates’ posts.) Rubric – 10 points total 8 points – for giving feedback to each of your group members who submitted a post 1 point – for submitting all of the feedback by the deadline 1. Abortion With the recent development of even more regulations in certain states in terms of their abortion laws, it is more important than ever, to examine whether or not it is the moral choice for the government to be involved in a woman’s decision to give birth or not. This truly is a multifaceted issue, on one end there are a lot of different moral codes that we have learned about in class, such as the ten commandments (thou shalt not kill), Buddhism (all living things are important), etc. On the other hand, what about the rights of the would-be mother? Why is it acceptable for the government to tell women what needs to be done with their bodies? What happens when a woman is sexually assaulted, does the government still believe the woman shouldn’t have the choice to abort that pregnancy? Is the government taking pieces of a woman’s right to body autonomy? According to planned parenthood, there are 18 states in the united states that have strict regulations on abortions, or they are not allowed at all. I have strong personal beliefs about this topic. I would like to examine this topic through the lens of morality. While bearing in mind the 4 components of moral behavior as well as the informal fallacies while creating the point we intend to make. 2. CONTEMPORARY PROBLEM: Abortion and Disability DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM: The debate of abortion is whether if it’s morally right to deliberately end a pregnancy before childbirth, killing a fetus. During pregnancy women are given the option to take an antenatal test that can test for chromosomal anomalies that cause disabilities such as down syndrome. Some argue that abortion should be allowed if the fetus suffers from physical or mental handicap. Pro-rights see disability as a tragic state justifying abortion. Whereas anti-choice advocates the value of life if a fetus has a disability or not. MORAL ISSUE: In the reading of Moral Theory by Judith Boss under Utilitarian Considerations for Thinking About Moral Issues it asks who or what will be affected. The mother that's pregnant and the fetus will be affected. If the mother goes forth with the abortion, it will cause the life of the fetus. Disabled and families of disabled are also affected because it would imply that the lives of disabled people are less valued than the lives of healthy individuals. Another moral issue that comes into play is it’s morally right to control the freedom of what a woman can or can’t do during pregnancy and if it comes down to their child having a disability, do they have the right to necessary support? A law was upheld preventing a physician from performing an abortion upon a patient finding out that her fetus having down syndrome. Some argue if it's the state's choice to uphold then should the state be responsible for financially supporting the family for their additional needs? 3. Missing and murdered indigenous women For my philosophy project, I am choosing the topic of missing and murdered indigenous women. Indigenous women and girls are the most likely of any ethnicity to experience violence and murder. This is quite alarming and lack of support from the American government makes it appear that these lives are expendable and do not matter. There are not many resources being utilized to help solve these crimes and make the world safer for this ethnic group. Watching the movie Wind River gave me ontological shock because my worldview was very skewed in regard to this topic. This movie is about indigenous women that are raped and murdered on reservations in Wyoming. As a society, we know that murdering is morally wrong and unacceptable. Because these women are not white, their stories are not heard and their cases go unsolved. Fundamentally, this issue is a symptom of a deep history of inequality of indigenous people from when European settlers took this land from them. Native Americans do not experience the same rights and privileges as white people. More of them are on welfare, experience substance abuse issues, and much different social systems such as policing and lack of government assistance. We are all human beings and deserve to take care of each other, regardless of our ethnic background. We have a moral obligation of safety to help indigenous people. 4. Privacy The issue with privacy, especially internet privacy has been put aside and forgotten about by the end users. Consumers these days just hit accept on the agreements without thinking about what they consent to giving. Many social media apps collect user data and sell this data to companies which send ads to us every day. It is scary how someone could be talking about something and the next day they get an advertisement for it. The data collected from the usage could be used inappropriately or private information could be collected without the consumer knowing. The moral issue at stake is ethical egoism. Ethical egoism believes in pursuing and rationalizing self-interest. In this case it would be the big companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google trying to profit from the consumers in their self-interest. The consumers trust the companies to keep our data safe and not misuse it. Many users are not aware of the fact that our phones, and social media track all of our data from usage and create advertisements for each individual user. The data collected can be sold to other companies in order to make money. While these companies generate money, the end users could have security breaches and their information could be leaked. 5. Contemporary problem : Human caused global warming. Describe the problem: Global warming is a result of people practices like emission of greenhouse gases. When carbon dioxide and other pollutant collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth surface. Although the radiation could escape in space, but other pollutant can exist for many years in the atmosphere, this traps the heat and the cause the earth to get warmer. Heat trapping pollutants are carbon dioxide, methane synthetic gases, water vapor are called as greenhouse gases and the impact that is caused by it is greenhouse effect. What moral issues are at stake? Global warming has great factors on health particularly with changes in weather extremes, severe storms ,rising seas, drought and fires, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, hypothermia and dehydration, premature deaths. The moral issues that are created by global warming is because humans and nature got complex relationships. The uncontrolled climate change can cause human life on the planet to become difficult and eventually impossible. Climate change not only impact our ecosystem ,it undermines the foundation of our fundamental rights, narrows inequalities and create new way of injustice. Climate denial has increased the risk of catastrophic global change. The fossil fuel owners use the denial machine method to prolong the dependence on their own products. Their purpose is to shape public opinion when the fact is against them. The economic and political leaders take as if it doesn't exist. Whether they are the reason for the environmental harm or just ignore the major threat against the survival of human species. My believe is that global warming exists and is human caused . It is very critical issue that need to be addressed for the survival of human species.
