Task:
In this assignment, students identify a social sciences model or theory and explain how that model could be applied to the assessment and resolution of a public health problem of their choice.
Ensure reader can follow story through an evaluation framework that is expected of the student to develop-not copied from the internet, something customized to the topic student is addressing and shows the assessment of the public health problem.
Think precede proceed & assessments/evaluation frameworks
Student must first research the social science literature to identify a model of theory that the student think may be of use in the assessment of a public health problem of choice & in the development of an intervention to address that problem.
Students are encouraged to research theories on their own, and are encouraged to not used a theory covered in class, but a theory is used from class the student is expected to go beyond the course reading to learn more about the theory.
Theories gone over in class: ‘’The Health Belief Model, Theory of Theory of Reason Action/ Theory of Planned Behavior, Transtheoretical Model/Precaution Adoption Process Model, Social Cognitive Theory, & Diffusion of Innovation/Social Marketing, Origin of Learning Theory, Social of Learning Theory, & the Social of Cognitive Theory’’ these theories if used must be elaborated on.
In the Paper Students must First Provide a Brief Review (less than a paragraph) of the social science theory, with citations to the appropriate literature, which describes the theory.
Next the student is to explain how the chosen theory could be applied to the assessment of the relevant public health problem.
Next the student should explain how the theory could be applied to the development of a new or improved public health intervention to address the problem.
What is meant by the ‘’assessment’’ of a public health problem?
What I mean is: How does the theory change the way the student would go about evaluating the problem of interest?
What would you do differently to identify the causes of the problem and the points at which an intervention might be effective?
For example, if your theory is social norms theory (not covered in class) and your problem is smoking initiation, then an important implication of social norms theory for assessment is that you must first assess what are the social norms regarding smoking among adolescents.
You cannot intervene to change those norms until you first identify what the norms are.
This is an important implication of social norms theory; because in the absence of this theory, one would not necessarily spend time ascertaining 6 what the social norms are regarding smoking among adolescents.
Then finally how would your improved intervention look like.
Note: The public health problems used for project A and B should be different, or at least different aspects of the problem should be considered.
Project B should not be simply a reiteration of the points made in Project A.
Paper Grading Guidelines – Project A The following are the general criteria that will be used to grade this assignment.
These are guidelines only and may be modified based on the individual structure and content of specific papers.
However, these guidelines should provide students with a good sense of the aspects of the paper that are most important in evaluating them.
Criterion Points Review of Social Sciences Theory 15
Application of Theory to the Assessment of Public Health Problem 20
Ensure you have clear headings for both your paper.
Your paper should be free from grammatical and typographical errors, & do not forget the display of a conceptual or theoretical framework- Especially for project A
Keep it simple. Use a conceptual framework- or illustrations include your artistic side.
