ENGL 105 English Literature
Please ensure that you have a clear and creative thesis statement that makes an interesting comparative argument about the works in question. Using the technique of close reading you have learned in the course, be sure to support your thesis well with evidence from the stories, including a least one passage analysis. Note that along with theme, an understanding of character arcs and epiphanies will also be necessary to write a good essay. Don’t forget to include a References page, cite all your evidence, and follow APA format. Refer to the “Guidelines for Essays” on the next page for further presentation instructions. Bearing each story’s central message in mind, discuss the theme of familyin the three texts. Are the families depicted in the texts happy or unhappy? Are there conflicts between family members? Can their conflicts be overcome? Do the texts suggest that families are necessary for happiness or success? Immigration/migration to a new homeis difficult for anyone. Compare and contrast the character arcs (journeys) of three migrant/immigrant characters in the three stories, who have to overcome certain obstacles before they can successfully integrate and call the new location “home.” What are some of the similar (or opposing) challenges they face, and (how) are they ultimately able to face and overcome them?
