ARTH1100 History and Appreciation of Photography

This exam consists of three questions. Each must be answered in paragraph form with answers not longer than 500 words each. This is not a research assignment; you need not use sources other than class notes and readings. Citing sources is not necessary. Take your time and read each question carefully. They are quite open so you will have to think about how you want to answer. Each answer will be marked out of 20 points, for a total score out of 60 for the exam. Question 3 is on the next page. All images are from class and can be found in the powerpoints posted on our Brightspace site. Answers are due at the end of exam period, Dec. 23, with no exceptions. Failure to submit an exam by this date without a formal deferral from the university will result in a mark of zero. DO NOT LEAVE IT TO THE LAST MINUTE. Answers can be submitted to the dropbox on our cuLearn site in doc or pdf format before 11:59 PM on December 23 at the absolute latest. 1. Both Umayyad and Carolingian architecture make reference the past. Compare how they do this and for what purposes. 2. These both portray imperial figures. How are they different? How are they similar? How does this effect the impression of rulership that they convey?2 3. Compare these two structures. How are they constructed? What is similar and different about this?
