HIST 1002 History

Please limit your answers to between three (3) and five (5) pages.  If you do go over this suggestion, please limit the overflow to one (1) additional page (I have a lot of these to read). PART I: Did the effects of the First World War cause or affect already existing political instabilities of the inter-war period?  How did the war affect these instabilities, if at all?  Please discuss with reference to at least three (3) different nation-states and compare or contrast how each was affected by the war and its outcome. OR What impact and influence did imperialism, both in the sense of overseas colonies and the formation of land empires in Europe, and nationalism and nationalist movements have in the origins and war aims of the belligerent nations during World War I?  Discuss this in the context of at least three (3) different states with at least one from the Entente (UK, France, Russia) and one from the Central Powers (Germany, Austria, Ottoman Empire). PART II: With regard to the early Stalinist period in Soviet Russia, discuss the First Five Year Plan and the drive to industrialize.  Was modernity and modernization necessary for the Soviet state and why or why not?  Consider your answer in terms of Soviet Russia as a militarily and industrially “backward” nation, its perceived and perpetualdesire to “catch up” to Western Europe, and the resultant Collectivization and Holodomor.   OR Was the introduction and implementation of the Nuremberg Race Laws necessary to the creation of the Volksgemeinschaft (People’s racial community) and the Nazification of “Aryan” German society?  Discuss the effect of these laws on German Jews.  How was this interpreted by average Germans?  Did the Nuremberg Laws fundamentally transform how Germans viewed their neighbours and, by extension, themselves or were these forces already at work in Nazi society and these laws simply exacerbated existing Antisemitism among the German people?
