Purpose

To examine communication strategies related to palliative and end-of-life care with Aboriginal clients.

Assignment

Write a 5-8 page academic paper on one of the following topics related to communication in palliative and end-of-life care with an Aboriginal client.

1. Discuss the strategies of effective, respectful communication with an Aboriginal older adult and his/her family who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Elaborate on the role of the nurse in communicating with the patient and the family.
   
   
2. Discuss the implications of colonization, and in particular the effects of residential schools, on the communication needs of an Aboriginal client receiving palliative end of-life care.
   
   
3. What role does cultural competence play for a nurse caring for Aboriginal clients? Argue the cultural challenges a nurse might face when caring and communicating with Aboriginal clients receiving palliative end-of-life care. Suggest solutions to these communicative challenges. What impact do you think this experience may have on your future practice?
   
   
4. Interview an Aboriginal member of your community and discuss the perceptions and cultural practices associated with palliative end-of-life care processes versus Western What are some of the biggest challenges experienced with communicating with a healthcare team? What does evidence say about how these challenges can be dealt with?
