Instructions: For the Annotated Bibliography assignment, decide on a Thesis (an arguable point) in relation to one of four Intelligence Squared Debate Topics:
? COVID: Who Owns the Vaccines”.
? “Slavery Reparations”.
? “Stop Worrying About National Debts”.
? “Can Employers and Schools Require Vaccines?”
You will then undertake Library Research to accumulate source material. This material must include, at a minimum,
? At least two (opposing) perspectives on the arguable point,
? One web site on a substantively related subject, and
? Two peer reviewed academic articles.
You will annotate each source with grammatically correct sentences that detail the relevance of the material to your thesis. An introduction should precede the annotated source material. This introduction offers a descriptive plan for your Academic Research Paper and its argument. One paragraph of the introduction will offer any necessary definitional and historical information that is pertinent to the issue. Resources:

Why Assess debates in an English class?
-They force students to deal with complexity and “gray areas”
-They improve students’ aural communication skills
-They are rich in imbedded content
-They can help provide relevancy of course material to everyday issues, especially the need for articulacy and the ability to assess the nature and quality of evidence and its presentation.
Evaluation of Debates
Make draft notes as you listen to the debate and attend to the debate participant assigned to you. Then, fill out the Debate Assessment sheet. In debates the audience decides the winner. The attached page lists the criteria for you to use in deciding your vote. This includes
-Your observations on the individual’s perspective on the question clearly presented (do you know what their stance is?).
-Your notes on whether their argument is supported by data or evidence or based mostly on opinion?
-Your identification of their use of:
*ethos-(Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader),
*pathos-(Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response), and
*logos-(Logos is an appeal to logic and is a way of persuading an audience by reason).
-Your understanding of their criticisms of their opponent’s stance.
-rigor (did they get to the weak points in the argument)?
-logic?
-time limit?
-Who won/lost this debate? Why? To reiterate, it is not necessary for you to agree with the opinions of the debate winner.
