DIDH420 Philosophy of Design

Review the required readings in Unit 4 (Kopek, Chapter 5). Make a brief summary (notes) of the concepts related to Personal Space and Proxemics, Territoriality, and Crowding and Density. Consider how differences in culture, gender, age, and social status impact these concepts. Retain and refer to your notes as you complete the assignment Using found images of people in built environments (interior and exterior), create a visual study that documents the concepts and its variations. Note: you may include images of exteriors but they must be designed spaces. You must include images of interiors. Analyze the images and describe how they illustrate the ideas presented Compile your presentation using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign or Microsoft PowerPoint configured for sheets in landscape orientation, creating a a common layout template for each sheet. Provide a margin all around the sheet and use a minimum of font size 12 for the text. Content for each sheet is as follows: Label the title page (Sheet 1) with the assignment name, your name and the course name. Also use some means of creative layout to indicate the information within the study. Subsequent sheets entail the study itself. You may use as many or as few sheets as necessary to cover all of the required components; however you must consider legibility and graphic quality when doing so. You are free to use any layout to communicate your thought process in this assignment. Personal Space: Include a minimum of 5 images that illustrate your understanding of Personal Space Zones. You must include at least 3 different contexts (Culture, Age, Gender, etc.) Write a brief narrative that describes the contextual variations of Personal Space and refer to the images to support your statements. Each image must be labeled as a Figure, and each must include a citation of the original source
