ABCC1103 Introduction to Communication

PURPOSE

The objective of this assignment is to evaluate students’ ability to discuss the implications of communication technology and issues related to media ethics in Malaysia.

REQUIREMENT

Today, technology has changed the way we perceive ourselves, our environment and our relationships.  Life in the cyber world allows us to reshape our identity any way we like. Social media has changed the way we interact with society, making relationships more complex. Today, the principle of ethics in communication is very important because it provides respect to an individual, a group or an institution that is involved in the communication process.

Based on the above statement:

1. Discuss the implications of communication technology on human relationship.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using communication technology at the workplace or in an organisation? Provide relevant case studies/research (at least THREE) to support your points.

3. In your opinion, how important is media ethics in Malaysia? (example; concerning the accuracy of information, truth of facts, responsibility of maintaining freedom and privacy)?  Why?

4. Once you have completed writing the essay part – your next task is to prepare a video for 5-minute duration to present all the implications of communication technology on human relationship AND the advantages and disadvantages of using communication technology at the workplace or in an organisation that have been discussed in your essay:  

· Use your creativity in preparing the video presentation – it could be prepared by using (a) PowerPoint Slides and present; OR (b) Still photos or YouTube and present; OR (c) Any other creative way to develop your video presentation.

· However, please make sure your voice and face can be identified and seen during the presentation for evaluation purposes (refer to the rubric of video presentation).

· Then, upload the video on YouTube (refer to the instructions given in the provided manual. The manual can be downloaded in MyINSPIRE – Assignment Folder). 

Once you have uploaded your video on YouTube, there will be a link of your video that you need to “copy and paste” it in your essay document (Word file), at the last page of your essay (before the bibliography/references).
