Assessment is competency-based, and students are required to complete all learning outcomes and assessments for each course within the programme to achieve award of the qualification. There are five results you can achieve – A, B, C, NA or FER. You must achieve a C grade or above in all course assessments to pass the course. 

A FER means further evidence is required, and you must submit the evidence required to achieve a grade and to avoid an NA. There will be a time limit of 3-5 days on a FER resubmission.

When your assessment is marked FER, you will receive a resubmission notification via Canvas. Your tutor will ask you to revise and resubmit any incomplete sections by a specified date.

General Instructions

Effective management of capacity planning, total quality management and operational and logistical planning are key aspects to ensuring optimum operational functions within a business. In this assignment, you will apply each of the key areas listed to demonstrate your understanding of these within a business setting.

Use a New Zealand entity that you work in, have worked in, or another entity as your Case Study to enable you to complete this task. It is suggested you read through the assessment before selecting the entity you will use to ensure you can access the necessary information.

Introduction - Provide a brief overview of the key points.

Body of Assignment

1.1. Identifying capacity requirements.

Capacity management focuses on managing demand and adjusting capacity. 

a) Identify and analyse how your chosen Case Study deals with capacity management. (Ensure your analysis breaks down the parts showing which parts make an essentialcontribution to the whole).

b) Identify two (2) capacity management issues from your analysis 

c) Outline a TQM process that could resolve them.

d) Explain two (2) expected outcomes for the issues if we implemented the TQM process suggested in c).

1.2. Facility Location

a) Analyse your chosen Case Study’s location in relation to the following three general locational factors.
i. Proximity to customers
ii. Proximity to suppliers
iii. Proximity to labour

b) Provide two (2) examples of how you could improve the proximity without moving the facilities and explain an expected outcome for each.

1.3. Principles of Plant/Facility Layout

a) Analyse your chosen Case Study’s Plant/Facility layout. Ensure you cover at least four (4) of the factors in the list below. 
• Distance
• Space utilisation
• Flow
• Maximum flexibility
• Minimum handling

b) Provide two (2) examples of how you could improve the Plant/Facility layout of your chosen Case Study and an expected outcome for each.

a) Supply Chain

Explain what is included in the supply chain for your business. To support this, provide a diagram of the key components of your business supply chain.

b) Materials Handling

Analyse how your chosen Case Study incorporates the guiding principles of material handling. Ensure you cover at least two (2) of the factors listed.

• Eliminate unnecessary handling. 
• Minimise manual handling and use mechanical handling equipment where possible.
• Use the right equipment for handling to avoid damage and to reduce the cost. 
• Handle materials in the largest convenient unit load by the quickest means over the shortest route. 
• Make full use of the equipment.
