Find out about the population of your own country, or another country you are interested in. Your main source of your information might be the government’s website. Try to find out the following information about your chosen country.

1. The total population in 2000, 2005 and 2010. Show your information ad illustrate using a graph so that you can see the trend or trends clearly and write a note about it. Cite relevant reasons for the findings. That is increase or decrease in population.

2. The birth rate and death rate. Use this information to calculate the natural increase or decrease of the population. How does it compare with each other?

3. Use the birth and death rates to find out where your country fits into the demographics transition model (refer to chapter 3, page 72

(Figure 3.17 the demographics transition model)

4. Why did migrants leave their country to live in your chosen country to become immigrants? What are the Human Development Index for people who want to migrate there?

5. Does the country have a population policy to try to control population growth, or to increase it?

6. How do you classify your chosen country – is it considered a developed or developing country according to the criteria set by the World Bank, the international Monetary Fund and other international agencies? Discuss the criteria.
