Contemporary Nursing Issues: A Critical Review of Literature

The aim of this assignment is to provide students with the opportunity to review and critically  evaluate the literature relating to a contemporary nursing issue. This assignment will assess the following learning outcomes:

 1. Describe the professional issues faced by nurses working within a health care system and how  such issues impact on health care

2. Explain professional responsibilities and reflect on the role of the nurse within the  Singaporean health care system

3. Critique literature related to global, political, economic, cultural and environmental issues that  may have an impact on health care and nursing practice

4. Discuss contemporary issues related to health and illness and the contribution made by nurses to the provision of safe and effective health care

For this task you need to write a 1500-word essay. Choose one of the topics from Assessment Item 1 and focus on a specific aspect of this topic

o Global Nursing Migration or

o Disaster Nursing or

o Pandemic management or

o Threats or Stress in the workplace or

o Advancing the role of the nurse

Health information technology is the focus of the final assessment item and therefore not  included as an option for this assessment piece. Choose a research question and conduct a review of the literature on the topic to answer the question.  You should structure your essay using the followingfive headings

1. Introduction - Introduce the topic to ensure the reader can contextualise the paper. Clearly  articulate the aim of the essay. You need to specify which aspect of your topic you are reviewing  and what your research question is as these topics are very broad.

2. Search strategy – Provide a clear indication of the search strategy used. Specify the databases  accessed and the key search terms used.

3. Critical Review of Literature  Concisely summarise and critically analyse the 6-8 articles that  have been reviewed. A summary table of findings should also be included in this section the table is not included in the word count). 

4. Evaluation  Critically evaluate evidence in the relevant literature that outlines the professional  responsibility and nursing role and evaluates nursing implications related to the provision of safe  and effective care. Identify any implications for clinical practice, nursing administration, education, or research relevant to your topic. Source at least 4 additional papers on this topic so  that a total of 10 papers has been used in the essay. 

5. Conclusion - Conclude the paper by summarising the arguments presented

• Presentation and structure of the paper should support a logical flow of arguments and conform to the word count (excluding your reference list and table of findings).

• Use academic language1 throughout and use the third person unless otherwise instructed.

• Ensure that you use scholarly literature2 (digitised readings, research articles, relevant  Government reports and textbooks) that has been published within the last 6 years.

• Refer to the marking criteria when writing your assignment. This helps to ensure you address  all criteria and assist you in calculating the weightings of the sections for your assignment.

• Your essay should be supported by no fewer than 10 (minimum of 6-8 articles included in the  review and at least 4 additional articles in the introduction/discussion sections) different  sources from the scholarly literature, that conform to APA 7th edition style; references are to  be presented on a separate page.
 
• Word limits for assessment items need to be strictly adhered to. The word limit for an  assessment item includes in text citations, and quotations. The word limit does not include  the reference list or the table of findings. Please note the marker will cease marking your 
submitted work once they have reached the allocated word limit.
