Overview of TMA 01 for OGP103 ASEAN Studies

This assignment is worth 35% of the final mark for OGP103 ASEAN Studies. It comprises of one question and four sections. Answer all sections. Please use the cover page provided. The cut-off date for this assignment is 25 Feb 2022, 2355h.

The word length of the paper is 1000 words. The word limit is strictly enforced and pertains only to the main text. It excludes the bibliography, in-text citations, figure captions and the cover page. Figures are optional but lengthy text embedded in any figure will not be marked as they do not count towards the word limit.

1. You are to include the following in all your assignments: course code, name and SUSS PI No., and submission date.

2. Refer to the Student Handbook for details regarding plagiarism. The University has strict guidelines and will enforce severe penalties for direct and unacknowledged copying of course materials or the work of any other authors as this is regarded as cheating. You should not include a cover page, university logo, and declaration of independent work as these will increase your similarity index and affect your plagiarism report.

3. You are strongly encouraged to submit your assignments before the specified deadline. 10 marks will be automatically deducted via the grade-book system for each 24-hour block. There is strictly no extension of assignment deadlines. Please refer to the Student Handbook for more details.

5. You must include in-text citations and a list of references you have consulted in your work. Do not use footnotes or endnotes.

6. Please note that all OCAS components (i.e. your assignments) are compulsory. If you fail to submit any OCAS component will be given a ‘withdrawal’ grade immediately. If you fail to participate in assessed group assignments (e.g. presentations, debates,
discussions), you will also be given a ‘withdrawal’ grade.

Based on your research of secondary sources in Google Scholar and course materials, you are required to complete the following tasks:

(1) Analyse the progress and/or impact of technologies in the course of ASEAN integration. In your response, you may include but you are not restricted to: information and communication technologies (ICT), environmental, energy, logistical connectivity, Industry 4.0 or other forms of technologies. You may focus on one or a few selected field/area of technological development.

(2) Relate how emerging regional schemes/initiatives with parties external to ASEAN (including but not restricted to the likes of Belt and Road Initiative, Smart City Network with non-ASEAN partners, regional environmental initiatives, etc.) contribute to technological transformation within ASEAN member states. 25 marks

(3) Identify the major political-economic interests of ASEAN and non-ASEAN states that shape commercial interests and relations in the field of technologies in your examples, case studies, or supporting evidence. 25 marks

(4) Describe why Singapore, as a high-tech economy, faster implementer of technologies and innovative R&D hub, can play an important role in ASEAN when it comes to technological exchanges, facilitation, initiator or/and test-bed of new technologies.
