Students are to write a 2000 word, research-and-analysis essay (+/-10%) specifically addressing the question below.

  • Critically evaluate Hofstede’s conception of culture: to what extent does it help to explain the practice of HRM in small and medium enterprises or/and multinational companies AND what other influences might also be at play.

Students should provide a critical analysis of Hofstede’s conception of culture whereby theoretical definitions are required. Also, in the process of culture analysis students are requested to demonstrate the ability of developing the conception of culture in small and medium enterprise or/and multinational companies, as well as illustrate the challenges that emerge when the practice of HRM in SMEs or/and multinational companies operate in various economic systems. Moreover, students should provide practical examples to support the answer, which would be a significant condition in awarding higher marks. Students could use examples discussed in lectures or/and tutorials, or drawn from any textbook or research articles when answering the question.

Structure: Students are reminded that essays should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Moreover, each paragraph should contain one point which is reasoned thoroughly and explained well. Paragraphs should be linked appropriately to form a consistent narrative throughout.

Content: students must demonstrate:

[iii] the ability to collate material into logical and coherent lines of reasoning in a critical and analytical fashion; and

[iv] the ability to inform the reader whilst answering the question.
