Bridge Deck Design Coursework Submission Instructions

Submission requirements

The coursework submission including (i) the three A3 size drawing in a single PDF file and (ii) a report in a single Ms Word or Pdf file, must be uploaded to the submission links (one link for PDF drawings in one pdf file and one link for report) on the 7026_2021MAYSEP moodle web by 18:00 on the due date.

You can only upload the report file twice. The first upload is to allow you to test the Turnitin similarity result. The second upload will be marked. Turnitin does not return result within 24 hours. It is your responsibility to upload early in order to receive Turnitin result. Under no circumstance, extension will be given because Turnitin does not return result before the submission deadline.

Module Learning Outcomes Assessed:

1. Prepare well thought-out and valid conceptual design schemes for bridges.

2. Carry out structural design calculations to the UK standards for medium-span composite motorway bridges.

3. Carry out design of bridge components such as parapets, abutments and bearings.

4. Specify methods of construction and materials to construct motorway bridges.

Task and Mark distribution:

Bridge deck design is the main tasks of bridge engineers. This coursework consists the design of a multi-span bridge deck. Please see “Task Brief” below. A series of guiding statements are provided to help the students to complete the tasks.

Present your work neatly. The calculation should be accompanied with (i) sketches to demonstrate load paths and structural sections etc and (ii) statements of assumptions made. Marks will be deducted for untidy work.

As a guide marks will be awarded as follows:

Description and comparisons of the two options 30%

Correctness and accuracy of required calculations 20%

Construction Method

Health and Safety 10%

Environmental impact 7%

Logical sequence (include traffic management) 13%

Note: Poor quality of report writing, graphs, figures, sketches and illustrations will reduce mark up to 30%

1. You are expected to use the Coventry University Harvard Referencing Style. For support and advice on this students can contact Centre for Academic Writing (CAW).

2. Please notify your registry course support team and module leader for disability support.

3. Any student requiring an extension or deferral should follow the university process as outlined here.

4. The University cannot take responsibility for any coursework lost or corrupted on disks, laptops or personal computer. Students should therefore regularly back-up any work and are advised to save it on the University system (all students have OneDrive as part of the Office 365 package).

5. If there are technical or performance issues that prevent students submitting coursework through the online coursework submission system on the day of a coursework deadline, an appropriate extension to the coursework submission deadline will be agreed. This extension will normally be 24 hours or the next working day if the deadline falls on a Friday or over the weekend period. This will be communicated via your Module Leader.

6. Assignments that are more than 10% over the word limit will result in a deduction of 10% of the mark i.e. a mark of 60% will lead to a reduction of 6% to 54%. The word limit includes quotations, but excludes the bibliography, reference list, appendix and tables.

7. You are encouraged to check the originality of your work by using the Turnitin links on your Moodle Web but be aware that Turnitin does not return results within 24 hours.

8. Collusion between students (where sections of your work are similar to the work submitted by other students in this or previous module cohorts) is taken extremely seriously and will be reported to the academic conduct panel.

9. A marked difference between your writing style, knowledge and skill level demonstrated in class discussion, any test conditions and that demonstrated in a coursework assignment may result in you having to undertake a Viva Voce in order to prove the coursework assignment is entirely your own work.

10. If you make use of the services of a proof reader in your work you must keep your original version and make it available as a demonstration of your written efforts.

Coventry Design Group (CDG) have been retained as a consultant to carry out a conceptual design for the bridge, and to prepare an Approval In Principle (AIP) document to the Local and Highway Authorities. You are employed by CDG to prepare a report of the following scope in order to complete the required AIP submission.

a) Consideration of at least two distinct and viable structural arrangements for the bridge.

b) A clear recommendation to the Authorities on which scheme should be selected, with reasons for your choice.

c) A structural design calculation for the primary structural members of the selected scheme.

d) A clear description with sketches of a safe and practical construction method for the selected scheme.

d) A set of engineering drawings
