Student instructions for examination replacements in May 2020
1. For the May 2020 examination period, all face to face examinations will be conducted instead via online time constrained assessment.
2. You should ensure that you are able to sit in a quiet undisturbed place, with internet access, power and a reliable PC/laptop.
3. In advance of the assessment, you should ensure that you have a copy of any software you intend to use, such as Word or Excel and free scanning software if required. Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel) can be downloaded from your online student area.
4. The assessment will be time released on Blackboard at the agreed start time under the Assessments tab in the relevant module.
5. Submission points will also be set up in that folder.
6. The assessment will be visible for the agreed duration. You may download and/or print it if you wish.
7. To allow for any additional issues with tackling the online assessment, including time difference from your location and the
UK, you have been given 24 hours to complete a 02-hour assessment. This allows for a range of scenarios that may affect students.
8. If you are entitled to additional time on a support plan this has been factored into the 24 hours given to complete what is a 02 hour assessment. If this presents difficulties, alert your module leader and the staff who co-ordinate your support plan.
9. The time includes: 15 minutes reading time, 02 hours to complete the assessment, and 30 minutes to put together a single file and to upload this file.
10.You may not contact your tutor or anyone else for help during the assessment.
11.As with any other assessment submission, you are responsible for submitting your work on time. If it helps, you could set a timer for the duration of the exam to remind you how much time you have left.
12.Please ensure that your student ID is clearly visible on your answer sheet(s) in your uploaded file, along with your name (anonymous marking is currently suspended).
Q1 A reinforced concrete beam which is 300mm wide and 500mm deep is required to span 4.9m between the centers of supporting brick piers. The beam carries characteristic dead (including self-weight of beam) and imposed loads of 21kN/m and 14kN/m respectively. Assuming fcu = 35N/mm2, fy = 460N/mm2. Design the beam for bending reinforcement using 25mm cover to the reinforcement.
Q2 Design the longitudinal steel for a 410mm square short braced column with the following loads. Assume fcu = 35N/mm2 and fy=460N/mm2 Gk = 800kN Qk = 1000kN
Q3 A rolled Universal beam section in grade 275 steel is to span 8.5m simply supported, and supports 4kN/m uniformly distributed Dead load and 6kN/m uniformly distributed imposed load . select a suitable Universal beam section to satisfy the bending and shear considerations.
Q4 A 3.9 m long internal steel column in a rigid jointed steel structure is to be loaded concentrically with 800kN dead load and 1000kN imposed load. Assuming the fixity at the top and bottom of the column gives effective rotational restraints, design column sections assuming the structure will be braced.
