6TE501 Innovation in Sustainable Engineering Design

Description of the module
In this module, students will explore how successful innovations emerge and how designers, technologists, managers and end-users create and apply new ideas and inventions. Students will look at how these are translated into marketable products or processes and how they can combine commercial and competitive advantage with ensuring a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable future. Students will work individually on a project that makes use of the ideas and methods taught in the course.

Schedule of work
This module will be delivered using a blended approach. Each week there will be a 90-minute synchronous (live) session that you must attend at the time and location indicted on your personalised timetable. Each week there will also be some asynchronous materials for you to engage with you at a time that suites you. We expect this work to be completed to allow you get the most from the live sessions. In the study materials section on course resources, you will find a detailed week-by-week break down of these tasks. It also expected you will undertake your own directed study to supplement the resources we have provided.

Proposal: Part of Assignment 1. 10% weighting within the 80% for Assignment 1
Assignment 1: 80% weighting; Learning outcome 1
An individual technical report and presentation (any format but ppt preferred) that demonstrates the use and application of innovation and creativity concepts and theory to solve a technical problem to achieve a sustainable future. This is word count includes the initial innovation project report 2,500 words in length or equivalent with a power point presentation of around 500 words, giving a total word count of 3,000 words..
Assignment 2: 20% weighting; Learning outcome 2
An individual refection of your own career aspirations and potential professional development for the next 10 years. You should use the appropriate tools from the module and be guided as to the
output medium. 2,000 words in length or equivalent.
