Identifying and Reporting on Construction Site Practice: A CCS Monitor's Guide

Part 1 Site Visit Preparation

You are required to identify a construction site that you can visit on foot and as part of your permitted daily exercise routine. Your role will be to act as a CCS monitor identifying good and bad practice on site and prepare a report in the same format as a CCS report.

In preparation for your site visit you should:

  • Contact the site supervisor to advise that you will be observing and photographing the site. (n.b. this MUST be done only from publicly accessible observation points.
  • Politely request information about the site be emailed to you if available.
  • If possible, find out what activities will be taking place on site and obtain and read relevant Risk Assessments and Method Statements.
  • Prepare a plan for your visit including a comprehensive checklist.
  • Prepare a site-specific Risk Assessment for your site visit.

Part 2 Site Visit

  • You must visit the site alone and, if requested to move by the police or other officials, you must do so promptly.
  • You may wish to visit the site on numerous occasions focussing on different aspects or activities on each visit.
  • You should photograph or video activities PROVIDING you have permission from the site manager. You should not photograph individuals without prior permission.
  • If you are unable to physically visit the site, you can use Google Earth and online resources for your visit.

In the unlikely event you are permitted to enter a site you must obey all site safety rules, participate in relevant site inductions and wear all required PPE. You will be accompanied by qualified and nominated site staff and must always stay with your guide.

Part 3 (75%) Report

Individually you are required to submit a report (max 2,000 words, excluding graphics, photos, tables charts, appendices, etc.) on your site investigation. This report must include as Appendices the plan for the visit, checklist, and RA (Part 1), details of your site visit (Part 2), and your assessment of the five aspects of the CCS (see monitor’s checklist on CCS website)  

Deliverables:

All work must be your own ORIGINAL work or must be properly cited and referenced. For this assignment, a LOW similarity score is expected as the report will be entirely original with only minimal use of external published sources.
