Assessment Task Details and Instructions

Assessment title:  3D Game Development 

To build on existing programming skills and to further those through the development of a 3D game world, managing cameras, lights, models, collisions, sounds, menus, etc. within this world, to create an interactive real time game.

You will design and create a simple 3D game from the game components that you have been developing and investigating in the workshops. You can download free assets such as models and sounds from the Unity assets store and the internet. You can use the learning materials on the course and tutorials on the internet to assist you in the development of the game. All code that you write should be placed in a directory named _Scripts. Any code from tutorials should be referenced. You should not use game packs or game frameworks or tutorials that create a complete game. Games can be written in Unity with very simple scripts as shown in the first video tutorial. The type of game that you develop is up to you. You can examine previous assignments by accessing Blackboard and discussing your options with the module leader. When deciding on a game, you should define your target market and game style; choose a game goal and ending criteria. Your concept should be simple, and achievable. Concentrate on gameplay when you are developing your game – getting things to work with simple models. Afterwards you can replace the simple models with other assets.

You will be assessed in the following way:

3D Game (90%)

  1. Complexity and sophistication of scenes and sound (15%)
  2. Movement and collision detection supported (15%)
  3. Game play features (30%)
  4. Game menus and instructions (10%)

Supporting documentation with an introduction to the game and then, explaining in detail how you have implemented the features assessed in the main deliverable. You could write approximately 2 to 3 pages of text on each of the 4 components of the main deliverable numbered above, giving about 12 pages of description and also include images within the text. You can also include details of how to play the game, cheats, debugging checks, links to tutorials that you used, etc.  (20%) 

Demonstrations of the games will take place in week 17. Date and time will be set on publication of the exam dates. Along with the demonstration of the game, the student will create a short video description/trailer of the game in use developed as part of the games advertising strategy, see Blackboard for examples from previous years. Video to be uploaded to Blackboard at time of demonstration and should be a maximum of   45 seconds.

On successful completion of this assessment, you will be able to:
