Guidelines for the Preparation and Submission of assignment

Topic: Construction and materials technology

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Apply quantitative methods and computer software relevant to civil engineering discipline to solve civil engineering
  2. Understand mathematical principles necessary to underpin your education in civil engineering discipline & to enable you to apply mathematical methods, proficiently in the analysis & solution of civil engineering

There should be a title page identifying the program name, module title,  assessment title, your name and student number, your tutor’s name and the date of submission.

Electronic submission only. The assignment should be in a pdf format (scan all pages of assignment including the A3 papers with drawings) and uploaded into Turnitin via the Moodle class area. If you experience problems in uploading your work, then you must send an electronic copy of your assessment to your Module Tutor via email before the due date/time.

Please note that when you submit your work to Moodle, it will automatically be checked for matches against other electronic information. The individual percentage text matches may be used as evidence in an academic misconduct investigation (see Section 13 in the Module Guide).

Requests for extensions which take a submission date past the end of the module (normally week 15) must be made using the Mitigating Circumstances procedures.

Some students with registered disabilities will be eligible for revised submission deadlines. Revised submission deadlines do not require the completion extension request paperwork.

Please note that the failure of data storage systems is not considered to be a valid reason for an extension. It is therefore important that you keep multiple copies of your work on different storage devices before submitting it.

Earthworks Management – Brief

  • A mass haul diagram must be produced for the earthworks planning of a substantial le ngthof motorway, to be constructed partly in both cutting and on
  • The motorway isto comprise: 8 Lanes @ 3.40m wide each
A central reservation @ 3.60m wide 2 hard shoulders @ 4.10m wide each
  • This is Phase 2 of the proposed scheme which is to commence from a formation level of 62.5mAOD at chainage 3000m, rising at a uniform gradient of 63% to chainage 4400m.
  • The following Reduced Levels depict the existing ground profile along the centreline of the works:-

  • The cross section for cutting / embankment is as illustratedbelow:
a) Using the above information tabulate for each chainage interval:-

Chainage (m)

Existing Ground Level (mAOD)

Proposed Motorway Level (mAOD to 2 decimal places) Depth of Fill (-) / Height of Cut (+) (m to 2 decimal places) Cross-section Area (m2 to 2 decimal places) Volume (cut + / fill -) between each chainage interval (to nearest m3) Cumulative Volume (to nearest m3

Provide an example of manual calculations using sketches for at least three chainages for the above
  1. Produce an appropriately labelled longitudinal section of the scheme on plain A3
    • Vertical axis @ scale 1:200 (1cm =2m)
    • Horizontal axis (chainage) @ scale 1:7000 (1cm =70m)
    • Use a horizontal axis (datum) of 0 m AOD for verticalplotting
    • Include existing ground profile and the proposed
  • Fully annotate and identify all significant features on the Longitudinal Section.
  • The existing ground profile must be represented by straight lines between chainage
  • Section must be manually drawn (not oncomputer).
Prepare an appropriately annotated Mass Haul Diagram for the scheme , on the plain A3 paper (beneath the Longitudinal Section).
  • Vertical axis (cumulative volume) @ scale (1cm =10000m3).
  • Horizontal axis (chainage) @scale1:7000
  • Construct the diagram initially with straight lines between chainages, then
  • Introducecurves where necessary to provide a smooth finished profile .
  • Fully annotate and identify all significant features on the
  • MHD must be manually drawn (not oncomputer).
c)  Produce the same MHD and Longitudinal section (to the same scales with appropriate annotations) on A3 paper and compute the Total Haul (in Station Meters in an appropriate table) for the No Borrowed Material Scheme.

The tables must reflect the earthworks management for the whole of the proposed works.

d)  Produce the MHD above (to the same scales). Using the rates provided below, evaluate the true cost of the earthworks operation when considering both Freehaul and Overhaul aspects of earthworks. (include all Formulae).

Freehaul Distance 550m

Freehaul Rate £2.2 per m3

Overhaul Rate 90p per station metre

Importing Rate £1.85 per m3

Tipping Rate £2.65 per m3

At tender stage the Estimator allowed a lump sum figure of £580,000 (from  experience and rough calculations). Comment on the suitability (or otherwise), of the Estimator’s approximation and discuss sustainable earthwork management.
