Background ScenarioÂ
You have been working as an Assistant to the Head of Human Resources (HR) at Hampton by Hilton London in Park Royal or you may choose another organisation of your choice (check that it is appropriate with you Tutor). Due to the lockdown, a number of employees have been furloughed and some have left their job. Â
Â
The COVID-19 vaccination rollout has given some ray of hope. The Head of HR would like to lay the groundwork for a post-lockdown future for the organisation. The objective is to improve the way in which the HR department works so they can recruit the talent they need and reduce staff turnover going forward. The Directors of the organisation, however, want to know if the HR department understands what is required (especially in relation to the pandemic) to safely and effectively recruit and retain staff with the talent and skills that the organisation needs to meet its business objectives.  Â
Â
Activity One: Report Â
The Key Elements of Human Resources ManagementÂ
Â
LO1: Explain the purpose and scope of Human Resource Management in terms of resourcing an organisation with talent and skills appropriate to fulfil business functions.Â
LO2: Evaluate the effectiveness of the key elements of Human Resource Management in an organisation.Â
The Head of HR has asked you to write a formal business report to submit to the Directors of the organisation you have chosen.  The report needs to convince the Directors that the HR department understands what to do in order to recruit talented staff  safely and effectively for their organisation.Â
Â
Make sure you explain and assess the purpose of HRM and all the different roles and functions the HR department needs to perform in order to fulfil its purpose.Â
Â
You should include any special considerations that are required because of COVID-19. You should refer to HR at your selected organisation, but you can refer to other organisations if you wish in order to show the full scope of the HR function. Â Â
Â
Make sure that you assess the role of different HRM practices for the transition out of lockdown, and critically evaluate at least three approaches to staff recruitment and selection that could be implemented at the organisation you have selected. Â Â
Â
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of each approach and  evaluate how they will help the organisation with its talent management.  Â
Â
Submission formatÂ
The required submission is in the form of a formal report. It must be word-processed, written work. Â You need to provide a completed cover page with clear indication of the unit number and title, the relevant task being addressed, your name and registration number. Â This should be written in a concise, formal business style using single spacing and font size 12. You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs and subheadings as appropriate. Â Any sources you draw information from should be referenced using the Harvard referencing system. The recommended word limit is 1000 to 1500 words excluding references.Â
Â
Activity Two: Portfolio
Â
Factors and practices that affect HRM decision-making Â
Â
LO3: Analyse internal and external factors that affect Human Resource Management decision-making, including employment legislation.Â
LO4: Apply Human Resource Management practices in a work-related context.Â
The Directors were happy with your report and may be ready to let the HR department start recruiting and selecting new staff for the organisation. Before they make the final decision, however, the Directors have told the Head of HR, your line manager, to prepare a portfolio that will help make HRM decisions and apply HRM practices at the organisation. Â
Â
The portfolio needs to include commentary and critical evaluation of documents or texts (e.g. policies, laws, strategies) that are important for HRM practices, employee relations and decision-making, including everything required in order to advertise and recruit someone for a job vacancy at the organisation of your choice. The vacancy you choose should be one that is realistic but not currently available at the organisation or your choice. Make sure that you consider COVID-19 requirements.Â
