Option One – TY Cocoa Ltd The scenario Our company TY Cocoa Ltd, - based in London, is a company that sources Cocoa from the Caribbean and producers and manufactures Cocoa for chocolate. It has been operating for just over fifteen years. In terms of international operations, it only exports its products internationally. Due to the increase competition – particularly from countries in Africa. It is seeking to expand and grow internationally. In January this year TY Cocoa Ltd purchased Atlanta Cocoa Growers a SME company based in the Nigeria – but have not started the process due to COVID-19.

 

With their knowledge and expertise, they primarily suggested that the company should be looking at either Ivory Coast, Ghana or Indonesia as potential international ventures. However, Senior management at TY Cocoa Ltd, have not conducted research into the IHRM implications of having a business in these three countries. Common to most IHRM practices, TY Cocoa Ltd intend to build on their export operations and follow an ethnocentric approach for the next two years and thus looking to recruit internally for management positions in either of these three countries. However, they lack international human resource expertise. However, they do have experience of running a domestic HR policy for the UK. As a result, they have duplicated their HR policy for this task.

 

Thus, HR advertised via email a position entitled “Director of IT and Business Relations”, to work in Ivory Coast, Ghana or Indonesia. Interested applicants were asked via email to submit a CV. Six individuals expressed an interest. However, in their eagerness to get things moving, HR did not provide a job description and personal specification for this position in this advertisement. You are a team of consultants, who have been asked to provide a brief presentation using ppt slides on the IHRM process of TY Cocoa Ltd. The task or terms of reference are provided below.

 

The best team will be chosen as consultants for TY Cocoa Ltd. Unfortunately, you only have the above information to work on, as the senior staff are busy dealing with the merger. Your team will have to work on the CVs provided (if applicable), theories, empirical studies & conduct your own external research. Task

 

a) From the three countries highlighted above, decide on two countries to study. Out of these two, compare and contrast by doing an external and cultural analysis of doing business in these countries. What conclusions do you arrive at from this analysis?

 

b) Following your answer from  illustrate and explain the structure of TY Cocoa Ltd and whether it should adapt or standardized their IHRM practices.

 

c) Briefly evaluate the international human resource recruitment and selection process that TY Cocoa Ltd has chosen so far.

 

d) Based upon research, models, theories and empirical studies, design and subsequently implement an international human resource recruitment and selection process for TY Cocoa Ltd. In your answer, what would be the profile of the candidate for Director of IT and Business Relations? Would you choose any of the candidates that have applied for the job? In either case, you must provide reasons for your decision.

 

e) If TY Cocoa Ltd want to expand internationally, provide recommendations for the next three years.

 

f) Does the merger with Atlanta Cocoa Growers have any bearing on your answers above? Explain. In your presentation, please ensure that you have strong academic foundation including theory, empirical evidence and references.

 

You will need to provide advice and justification in order to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the organisational factors, as well as cross-border cultural and institutional factors affecting international human resource management policies of TY Cocoa Ltd and to demonstrate understanding of the implications of managerial decisions. It must be clear in the slides who was responsible for each section in the presentation. It should be noted that these two companies TY Cocoa Ltd and Atlanta Cocoa Growers are fictional companies (not real). Thus, companies who have similar names are coincidental.

 

Also assume that in a covid-19 environment, your work should assume that the changing nature of this pandemic and be as real as possible. However, for the purpose of this assignment – doing nothing is not an option that we would like to be considered, unless this is heavily backed up by research.
