Prototype a Noise Monitoring IoT Solution

Learning Outcomes

Learning  Outcomes

On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate legal and ethical concerns and their solutions
  2. Design and justify an appropriate IoT solution to a relevant problem area
  3. Implement a system to interface with devices connected to the Internet of Things
  4. Evaluate an IoT application

Scenario

You work for IoTCity who specialise in IoT solutions for smart cities. You have been approached by Lancashire County Council to help improve the decision making of the council based on noise levels within the county. Information should also be communicated to residance and businesses.

You are required to prototype a noise monitoring system to demonstrate the benefits of this IoT solution. It shoud provide information to public venues about the noise levels within their proximity e.g. outdoor dining, along with the temperature. The data from sensors located across the county can be collated for decision making purposes by the council. The system is based around the infrastucture demonstrated.

A requirements specification has been produced for a prototype and you are required to develop the functionality as per the document. It is anticipated that the range of sensors and infrastructure will need to expand before the system could be deployed. At this stage it is a proof of concept, with code and algorithms designed on an Arduino.

Grading Criteria

To be awarded 40%

  1. You must submit the documentation and video demonstration or teams presentation.
  2. You must complete 5 of Must haves from the specification

To be awarded 50% in addition to the above

a.You must complete all the Must Haves and 3 of the Should haves

b.a. You must include suitable comments with your code to explain functionality

To be awarded 60%, in addition to the above

  1. You must demonstrate good coding practices e.g. naming conventions and structure
  2. You must complete all of the Must Haves and Should haves

To be awarded 70%, in addition to the above

a.You must explain how your system is appropriate and could be made scalable to cover a city.

b.You must complete all of the Must Haves and Should haves, and 2 of the Could Haves

To be awarded 80%+, in addition to the above
