a)Discuss clearly its heritage value and significance with reference to your online research and ‘BS 7913:2013 Guide to the Conservation of Historic Buildings’ under the following sub-headings:

  • Aesthetic Value;
  • Communal Value;
  • Evidential Value;
  • Historical Value.

b)Evaluate the likely symptoms of decay present and their root causes from a visual inspection of the images researched.  Include your labelled photos and images of the building.

c)Discuss the likely investigation processes and/or tests required to confirm these causes.

(i) Justify a suitable beneficial use for the building clearly describing the strategy for dealing with the property in terms of its conservation and adaption for modern day usage.  State clearly the assumptions that you have made based on your response to (a) and (b) above.

(ii) Undertake research to provide a similar real ‘case study’ precedent for such a conversion/restoration clearly explaining how the challenges were overcome.

Task 2 – Façade Retention Scheme – Individual Essay

Scenario Details – Former Public Hall and Library built in 1892-4 at Canning Town.

The façade is to be retained to form the entrance to a new shopping mall located on the footprint of the entire rear of the building,  which is to be demolished.  It is located in the London Borough of Newham, Barking Road, London, E16 4HQ.

You are advised to visit the property whilst undertaking this report, please note that there is no public access to the building itself.  Clearly state any assumptions that you have made about the condition of the existing facade

As the Temporary works co-ordinator propose a suitable façade retention system for the project as follows:

a)Undertake an approximate measured survey of the main elevation of the Public Hall building and identifying the main architectural features / materials and annotate them neatly on a 1:100 free-hand or CAD sketch.

b)Evaluate the best form of temporary façade scheme for the project in terms of practicality, fitness and relative costs.

c)Using schematic diagrams and a cross-section, based on 2(a),  show the main temporary works required for a proposed façade support system for the Public Hall to ensure that the existing facade remains stable during the demolition and construction period.

  • Show cleary the proposed temporary fixing method between the façade and the temporary support.
  • No structural calculations are necessary.

d)Propose a ‘Project Logic’ method statement for installing the temporary façade works and include the sequence of operation, the main materials, labour, plant and H&S requirements.

The structured essay for Tasks 1 and 2 should be in the region of 3500 words long in good English and properly referenced to ‘Cite Them Right’ – the Harvard System.

Task 3 – Architectural Styles

This will be a shared group presentation that will enable students to ‘Appreciate the historical range & styles of built assets in the UK and their traditional materials & methods.’ ( Learning Outcome No.1).

The group presentation needs to cover:

  • The  architectural style & the type of internal / external decoration found.
  • The common materials and construction methods used.
  • A typical case study building of that ‘architectural period’ described
  • The significant challenges in maintaining these types of building, wrt BS EN 7913:2013
  • Each presentation must finish with three questions posed by the Presenting Team, the answers of which were included in the presentation.

The presentation will be delivered live via MS Teams according to the schedule with follow up questions from the audience. The Architectural Peiods to be covered are given in Appendix 1.

All Team members must participate in the presentation with web cams on and with equal participation. It will be part peer assesed and contribute to 10 marks of the assignment grade.
