Design of Two Storey School Building including Critical Structural Elements

  • Cover sheet to be attached to the front of the assignment when submitted
  • Question paper to be attached to assignment when submitted
  • All pages to be numbered sequentially
  • All work has to be presented in a ready to submit state upon arrival at the HUB. Assignment cover sheets or stationery will NOT be provided by HUB staff
  • Assignment must NOT to be placed in a folder, plastic sleeve of any kind or bound in any other form than instructed

1. A two storey school building is required for a new town as shown in Figure 1.

2. The school building is to provide 24 classrooms located on two levels, equally divided either side of a hall and administration facilities. The classrooms are to be accessed from a central corridor at each level.

3. Columns are only permitted around the perimeter of the building and on the wall lines of the central corridor.

4. The internal clear floor height to all areas, except the hall, is to be 2.8m with a 200mm clear service zone under the structure. An external enclosed staircase is required at each end of the central corridor.

5. The building is to be clad in a flat composite cladding system and the roof is clad with composite profile sheeting.

Your design team is required to produce design of critical structural elements  excluding detailed design of the lift/elevator shafts, stairs and foundations. Following documents need to be submitted by the specific deadlines. The marks allocated are indicated in brackets.

  • You must work as a group of two students to submit at least two distinct and viable conceptual and scheme designs.
  • Conceptual Design class presentation. It must include structural grid showing location of principal structural elements and preliminary sizing of elements based on rule of thumb and span depth ratios. (10% marks)
  • Scheme Design class presentation. (10% marks)
  • You must work as a group of two students to submit at least two distinct and viable scheme designs with the help of appropriate sketches indicating clearly the design philosophy including key assumptions, functional framing, load transfer and stability aspects of each scheme. (20% marks)
  • Following the design appraisal of the schemes, you should identify the recommended structural scheme, giving reasons for their choice. (5% marks)

? Following the scheme/concept design phase, you must also work in group of two on your chosen scheme and must produce the deliverables listed below Please split the work equally and write your initials on each page:

? Produce sufficient design calculations to establish the form and size of all principal structural elements. Establishing “form and size” is taken to mean compliance with all relevant design criteria, i.e. bending, shear, deflection, etc. The design calculations must include clear loading and structural analysis calculations (the idealisations used and boundary conditions need to be clearly defined using sketches). (40 % marks)

? Clear drawings must be presented immediately following the calculations part (use A3 sheets and clearly write your ID and initials) to neatly show:

Drawings (structural plans and elevations) to show the dimensions and layout of structural elements and critical detailed drawings of main elements. (10% marks)

? Prepare a brief method statement for the safe construction of the building. (5% marks)
