Construction Site Management and Sustainable Building Design

Learning Outcomes

Learning outcomes
Code Description
LO1 Examine the managerial skills required to manage, plan and control a construction site.
LO2 Explain how relevant scientific principles, construction techniques and sustainability relate to building design and performance.
LO3 Calculate and process information, integrate theory and practice, define and solve problems and communicate solutions effectively.
LO4 Apply the skills of effective construction site management: planning, application of regulations, management of quality assurance and risk processes, and management of the construction process.

Scenario
You are employed as a Construction Site Manager for a large main contractor, who have been approached by a client (JMB Merchandising) to submit a bid to build a storage and distribution warehouse for the expansion of their storage facility for their online business, which has seen
significant growth since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The proposed location of the warehouse is on a brownfield site that is adjacent to their existing warehouse facilities, on an existing industrial estate which is located on the outskirts of a city within the UK. For the assignment you will be concentrating on the construction of the storage and distribution warehouse as indicated on drawings D1011-1, D1011-2, D1011-3 and D1011-4.
Drawings are available in the module on the VLE.

The warehouse is classified as flexible space with a storage area at ground level and two-storey office accommodation at the west elevation of the building. The construction will involve:
1. Foundations – In situ pad foundations
2. Frame – Steel portal frame construction
3. Ground floor – In situ insulated ground-bearing slab
4. Upper floor – Precast concrete slab (manufactured off site)
5. Stairs – Precast reinforce concrete (manufactured off site)
6. Walls – Insulated profiled steel sheets fixed to cladding rails
7. Roof – Insulated profiled steel sheets fixed to purlins.

Task
Complete the following activities and combine them into one report for your line manager:
a. Create a bar chart programme for the construction of the warehouse (approximately 35 operations) making use of the information contained in drawings D1011-1, D1011-2,  D1011-3 and D1011-4. This must include the critical path and any float for non-critical activities. You may use industry recognised project management software or Microsoft Excel for the project. You also need to include a written rationale for the programme.

(Approximate word count: 100 words.)
b. Write a report for the client which details how your company has a sustainable approach to its construction activities in order to support your bid for the project. Use specific examples from this project to highlight methods.

Marking guidance for this activity This guidance is designed to help you to do as well as possible in your assessment by explaining how the person marking your work will be judging it. Your work will be assessed in relation to the requirements set out in the assessment criteria marking guide at the end of this document and the grading guidance section below. It is recommended that you read both of these sections before starting your assessment to learn what will help you to achieve the highest marks. Once you have finished you should review the assessment before submitting it, to check you have done what is required to achieve the highest marks.

When you receive your feedback from your tutor you should clearly be able to see which categories you gained marks in and, where relevant, recommendations about how to improve your performance going forward.
