Â
Scenario
You are employed as a Construction Site Manager for a large main contractor, who have been approached by a client (JMB Merchandising) to submit a bid to build a storage and distribution warehouse for the expansion of their storage facility for their online business, which has seenÂ
significant growth since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.Â
Â
The proposed location of the warehouse is on a brownfield site that is adjacent to their existing warehouse facilities, on an existing industrial estate which is located on the outskirts of a city within the UK. For the assignment you will be concentrating on the construction of the storage and distribution warehouse as indicated on drawings D1011-1, D1011-2, D1011-3 and D1011-4.
Drawings are available in the module on the VLE.
Â
The warehouse is classified as flexible space with a storage area at ground level and two-storey office accommodation at the west elevation of the building. The construction will involve:
1. Foundations â In situ pad foundations
2. Frame â Steel portal frame construction
3. Ground floor â In situ insulated ground-bearing slab
4. Upper floor â Precast concrete slab (manufactured off site)Â
5. Stairs â Precast reinforce concrete (manufactured off site)Â
6. Walls â Insulated profiled steel sheets fixed to cladding rails
7. Roof â Insulated profiled steel sheets fixed to purlins.
Â
Task
Complete the following activities and combine them into one report for your line manager:
a. Create a bar chart programme for the construction of the warehouse (approximately 35 operations) making use of the information contained in drawings D1011-1, D1011-2, D1011-3 and D1011-4. This must include the critical path and any float for non-critical activities. You may use industry recognised project management software or Microsoft Excel for the project. You also need to include a written rationale for the programme.
Â
(Approximate word count: 100 words.)
b. Write a report for the client which details how your company has a sustainable approach to its construction activities in order to support your bid for the project. Use specific examples from this project to highlight methods.
