Developing Strong Management Practice and Effective Leadership Skills

The main aim of this module is to encourage learners to develop a strong sense of self- awareness and of their own strengths and weaknesses as managers and colleagues. The module is focused primarily on the acquisition and enhancement of those skills that are crucial to successful management practice and to effective leadership. The module will be delivered across 14 x 3 hour core workshops through UWLFlex addressing professional and personal development including CPD and the CIPD profession map, study skills and self-management; research methods; and business skills including financial information and interviewing skills.

This module has been accredited by the CIPD.

Specific expectations students can have of tutors:

  • Constructive formative feedback at different stages of development of the assessment portfolio.
  • Learning materials made available through UWLFlex prior to scheduled.
  • Seminar activities made available through UWLFlex 3 days prior to the first seminar group session in a week.
  • Assessment marks and summative feedback given within 3 working weeks from the assessment submission deadline.

Specific expectations tutors will have of students:

  • Attend all online and face to face classes and arrive at classes punctually.
  • Read articles and signposted resources provided prior to seminars and prepare answers to questions as per instructions given.
  • Behave professionally in online and face to face classes and not to cause any disruption that might affect other students’ learning.
  • Actively participate and engage in online and face to face class activities.
  • Inform tutor via email when not able to attend any online or face to face classes.
  • Communicate with tutors in a professional manner.
  • Dress in formal business attire for group presentation (assessment 1).
  • Attempt all assessments by the submission deadline unless there is extenuating circumstances (in which case please contact your Course Leader for extension request or mitigation claim)

Learning outcomes to be assessed

LO1 - Think critically and creatively, analysing, synthesising and presenting complex ideas and concepts, both orally and in writing.

LO2 - Develop critical understanding of different business research strategies and methods, and collect, collate and interpret data appropriate to a chosen research strategy/method.

LO3 - Interview, advise, guide and influence colleagues, customers/clients and others in a variety of contexts.

LO4 - Solve problems and make timely and ethical decisions after a critical appraisal of the available evidence and options.

LO5 - Analyse financial information relating to public and private sector organisations, including balance sheets, profit & loss accounts, budgets, ratios and costing models.

LO6 - Engage in critical self-awareness, self-reflection and self-management, continuing to learn through reflections on theory, practice and experience.
