TASKS

Scenario: You are working as a Junior Engineer for ABC Design & Build Company. The company has been awarded a contract for a London-based university’s Future Campus Project with a project value of £50m.

The work will involve demolition of an existing library building, construction of a large 4 storeyatrium and construction of a new Annex building with a total of 4,000 m² new-build area. The work also comprises of 25,500 m² of refurbishment.

The client would like the campus to be open throughout the demolition process as well as during the refurbishment period.

The client requires that the construction of new building with a large basement, is completed within the Summer months before the beginning of the new academic year.

Task: You are required to prepare a report for your manager on the following aspects. The report must contain an Introduction and the key areas under the following heads: Demolition: You are to assess the existing building before the demolition and carry out the Risk assessments to ensure that the work is completed with all health & safety measures in place. Pile Foundation: Due to the size of the new building, pile foundations are required to carry the loads. You are required to justify the choice of the type of piles used, given the location of the university building in a busy city area. You must then describe the construction process and list any problems that could encounter during the construction process.

Basement Retaining wall: A new retaining wall is to be constructed to form a permanent part of the new basement to be constructed. Explain the construction process of the retaining wall. Suggest a suitable de-watering method to control any ground water control problem, that might arise.

Frame construction: Based on the client’s requirement, you must justify the choice of the type of frame material for the new Annex building. You must describe the construction process. Identify  any health or safety risks that the operations may create for others working at the site as well as the students/staff who are in vicinity of the construction.
